Round headlights vs. Square headlights

My parents have been giving me crap about my round headlights (which i love) I personally dont favor square headlights

Which do you prefer?

Real is a term being thrown around very loosely in a conversation that requires good solid facts, facts backed up by solid reasoning, reasoning backed up by hearty consuption of beer. the most important fact is that jeep used round headlight buckets to hold square headlights square peg round hole need i say more

another one of my thoughts
jeep used round headlights from 1941-1979/ 1986 in cjs then returned to round in 1996 10years with sqr 45 +10 more and counting with round. The light reflection of a round reflection surface is more efficient and provides better projection than a square reflective surface.

Plus round is just cooler

Ok i p[ulled that out of my Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley but it sounded convincing

yepppp, the real reason.... which was given 20ish years ago.... by the most advanced auxiliary light manufacturers.... did i say, cibie, hella and the others.... the square light design was a mere fashion.... look at the new headlights.... even if the outside is square, the inside is round.

It ain't my fault that Jeep made my FSJ with the wrong headlights! :D That will be corrected in a couple of months though. Haven't decided on Razor or Rhino yet.

Dusty, to elude on your post, a friend and I compared our headlights side by side - his YJ & my TJ. We both have JCWhitney's "eagle eye" H4 housings, and both run Silverstar bulbs. Even our "nuetral" friends commented that my lights were noticeably brighter. Same brand & style housing, same bulb, round vs square. :)

Go look at the BMW's. For that matter check out all the lights on new cars - all have gone back to round behind the aerodynamic lense.

Huey Lewis said it's "hip to be square" and when's the last time you've heard from him?

I prefer the round headlights but I also believe the headlights have to match the appropriate grille they came with so if you have a muscle grille you should run square lights ect...

I voted for the round headlights because they just look better. The 80's square headlights akin to the 70's bellbottoms, just a fad. Hopefully they too will not make a brief come back. I have a pair of round headlights with the whole assembly. I just want to keep my original 1987 grill. I love the muscle grill but it belongs on the trucks and the Cheros.

Here's THE easy answer to this whole round VS square debate...

All you squares are just a passing phase.... I am thinking we can "round" this conversation up with the simple facts...

Snowbird_Hunter
08-30-2008, 06:14 PM
Well I do have an AMC Jeep, so I guess that explains it.

The narrow front ends, like the CJ and such, definitely look the best with round I will agree. I feel that the wide front ends have a different personality and for me it seems to look good with square.

Also I suppose it has a lot to do with what style you are heading for ... a full-on original restoration .... or something that might show your personal flair.

But that is one of the great things of this world, if we all agreed, it would be boring .... lol

Here's THE easy answer to this whole round VS square debate...

What vehicle was the first to be called "JEEP"?? What headlights did it have??? There's your answer... OlllllO

Uh oh. By that logic, a "real Jeep" is a short wheel base, open top, two door utility vehicle. Since it was first and all.

But that's OK, because I voted square because I love the muscle grill on my 84. (Oh, and I'm a YJ'er at heart :hide: )

RRRRUUUUNNNNN!!!!!!

I also have to admit, the razor and rounds is pretty frikkin' awesome too!!

RubiconMike

I like them both. I may be in the minority, but I like the rectangle lights in the '82 Cherokee. I think AMC did a good job keeping a fresh look on an old design with the new grill (I like the later model Jeepster Commando also).

Now if you're talking about a CJ/TJ type of Jeep, well then, there is no argument, it has to be round! Sorry YJ fans, it may be a great Jeep, but it just looks funny........

Why can't we just get along?
Why do we need to point and make judgements?
My NT 83 Chero has rectangle lights and it's not trying to be anything that it not.
That's right no plans to change the grill or what you people might call a retro grill install.
Then I would have to hear people say "Yes that looks good, But you know that thier not real."
And that all I ever wanted to be is real.

Johngetting rid of the plastic front end is very satisfying, come on, try it. Replace the sealed beams with the h4 adapters, and you have kickbutt lights. makes me happy

real jeeps have round headlights

Sorry, I am one to disagree with that....but know that many have that round is the only real Jeep perspective....so be it.

But, all those SWB Jeepers that have that attitude also are the ones ripping their 258s out to put in a 360 and T18 and so on from a FSJ! I have better crawl ratio with the *stock* setup of T18/D20 and 3.54 D44s in my '78 than most of those baby Jeeps dream about having after all their swapping and expenses. Good thing the '78's got round headlights or it wouldn't be a real Jeep afterall!

My favorite...Rectangle headlights with the muscle grill! Hated the pignose grills. Second fave is the 70s razor on the J's and Cherries (and only because of the classy grill and not the round headlights...they just happened to go together!). Then maybe Rhino, but only on the rigs it was originally on. Don't see the sense of a Rhino on a late 80s GW....looks way out of place.

I also think the XJs were one of the sexiest SUVs ever made.....and they have that sexy look *because* of their rectangle headlights, along with everything else. Round headlights on an XJ would look awful.....horribly awful! Remember, too....that not only AMC, but many of the other makers were moving to square or rectangle headlights at the end of the 70s and early 80s. Look at Dodge and Chevy pickups and more from that era and you'll see they all were changing over in the same timeframe. It was part of the look of the times. And, in my opinion, the rectangle headlights...not only on the SJs, but also the XJs, and more....were a "maturing" process....they were growing up more and looking more modern and with the times. How many other vehicles could look as good in 1963 as a Wagoneer and still look as nice as they were in '91 as GWs? After nearly 30 years with the same basic body style....it was an amazing run that was allowed to be such a long run because of the maturation over time...which included rectangle headlights.

Those that have the attitude of only real Jeeps having round headlights are missing out on a WHOLE lot of wonderful Jeep heritage and truth! But that's their right to have that attitude...just as I have a right to appreciate the value in a nicely made front end with the muscle grills and total XJ bodies and more!

since when did the shape of headlights become the higher priority than the off-road capability? It doesn't matter, as long as you can see.. lol

Here is a thunk. By the logic that "It's not a Jeep if the lights aren't around"

You guys would consider the newest additions to the Jeep brand as actual Jeeps? (Patriot and Compass) because their headlights ARE round.

That being said, my boyfriend and I have gone off-road with our Patriot. It's quite impressive, even only having the 2wd model - check out the link in my sig for pics/stories)

i like the muscle grille best, so i have to go with square headlights. of course, if there was a way to make round lights fit with the muscle grille id probably do it.

It is not that hard

I don't know what they are but they are not real Jeeps. Maybe the offspring of some experiment gone bad maybe. ;) And 7 slot grills is only an imitation of the real thing as well. I am not biased in this, I am RIGHT. lol

I find it interesting that my "Jeep" doesn't have the word JEEP anywhere on it.

So I will go with square - especially when you have a NOS pignose from red mistress (thanks Dennis) -

Looks like the percentages are being computed incorrectly. 341/406 =83.99%, not the 85.46% as shown. And the 65/406 = 16.01% instead of 16.29%.

The round vs. square headlight is the worst Jeep debate ever!!!!!!!!

Second would be the coil vs. leaf spring.

The only Jeep debate I support is IFS vs. solid axle.....

My parents have been giving me crap about my round headlights (which i love) I personally dont favor square headlights

Which do you prefer?

HOOT is right, your parents are stuck in the eighties! Kinda odd to see things backwards eh? ROUND is the way to go. Your rig just would look like the ugly duckling, 'cept it would never turn into a beewwteeefulll swan. Stick to your guns girl!! :drivin:

Round or square makes no difference. On or off is all that matters. If they turn on, you're good to go. If they don't, then it doesn't matter what shape they are.

There's just so much room to work with when you replace connectors, wires, install relays...:rolleyes2:

Did you know that the shiney stuff on the inside can come off and leave you with a perfectly clear headlight?? I didn't until a few years ago. Perfectly clear headlights aren't very bright...
