Is there a way to tell without measuring? It's a 79 Cherokee Chief 'S'. Does this automatically make it a W/T?

If you have big ole fenders sticking out, then its a WT. Compare to:

The WT axles are six inches wider than NT...

Chero Chief does not make it WT. The WT has fender flares, the NT does not.

Just because it has a Chief head on the glove box door doesn't mean its a Chief.
A Cherokee Chief HAS/IS a Wide Track.
Edit: Some people see a Chief emblem somewhere on a Cherokee and just assume it's a Chief.

What if you have the LARGE Cherokee Chief emblems on the Front Fenders?

Crazy...I witnessed your Cherokee by the way. Very nice find.
Even though there are emblems on the fender...it doesn't mean its a Chief.
Just a Cherokee. Hope that helps.

That round indian-head "S" emblem isn't a Chief emblem, even though it was used on the Chief models. I think it's supposed to be an emblem of a Cherokee warrior. The Chief was only available on a NT in '81-'82 on the 4-door models; I've never heard of nor seen a NT 2-door Chief.
The "S" model that used that round emblem, however, was available on all three body-styles.

Well, if they're the 1" flares, it's a NT; if they stick out about 3", then it's a WT.

Great I didn't figure I had a Chief but the emblems did puzzle me. I was never sure what the Emblems meant

The flares are pretty obvious, but until you see them side by side, it can be hard to tell by many. I have quit asking friends that tell me they saw an FSJ for sale if they were wide tracks... heh, ok
The front bumper is also wider on WT. Rear is the same between Chero and Wag.
wide track 2 door Chero, good example is RBY:

same front fenders used on the J trucks:

narrow track 2 door Chero, looks like Wagoneer, just 2 doors:

Super Wagoneer is same as all other Wags:
