View Full Version : Radiator Pukes After Shutdown

I was told this is a timing issue. It only happens after driving around for a while when the engine is real hot. About 10 seconds after I shut her off the rad releases about a pint of coolant
thru the overflow line right onto the ground. I can't imagine that there was never a reservoir to catch the overflow, but I don't see where it would of went.
My 74 Wag has no spot for one either, just a hose running down next to the rad

I have a res in my 78 and RBY's 80 W/T They are mounted on the driver's side right next to the radiator...look... the one next to it is the wahser fluid.

RB, That could be an option if I relocate my horn.
But, my overflow comes out on the pssenger side so
I would hve to think of a way to run the hose with out kinking it. Any thoughts on the timing issue as the culprit for the spewing coolant?
PS- RBY's W/T is looking good. Was it that clean in and out when she got it?

This exact thing started happening to me. It was, believe it or not, the cap. IT was not seating, no pressure. An easy pressure test is to squeeze the top hose after you stop and turn the jeep off. It ought to be hard. If it is, then you have pressure. Anyway, I would check the cap. I have seen jeeps with the overflow tube coming off the passenger's side, then simply turned and pointed the other way. Don't forget to check the cap!

I should replace the cap anyway so I'll check to see what happens and let ya know. what the heck for $5-$10 bucks.

I have a resevoir on my 67 that is mounted on the drivers side fender well. It is a universal that you can buy at almost all auto parts stores. I have a picture of it somewhere. I will have to look for it when I get home.

I have put one of those after market reservoirs on all 3 of mine. They are $8 at NAPA. very simple just get a longer Piece of hose and you can mount it anywhere you want. I just drilled a couple of hole in the metal piece that holds the radiator (ahead of the windshield wiper reservoir) and made a couple of brackets from strap metal.sets the same place as stock. MG :D :D :D
The puking is caused by...as you said....the fact that the FSJ was running too hot. Your radiator can jsut barely keep up with it when the car is runnning, but when you turn it off, there is no circulation, but the engine is still hot, so it boils over. Solution? maybe timing, maybe not, you need to do a search on all the cooling/overheating threads here and go through a whole laundry list of things to check off that will help solve the overheating problem.

My 77 did not have the catch tank and my over flow comes out on the pass side. I notched out the radiator support and installed a tank from a 79. Here iS A PIC. //www.jasonthomasfrance.com/jeeping/Dsc00011.jpg
