OK for all you winching guys. Which one do you prefer and why.

Here are a few thoughts of mine. Has to be electric.I have had a few instances where I needed to winch myself down hill with a stalled motor( fuel starved). You know the pick-up on the tank is in the rear http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif.

My choices are down to the warren 9500 i or the ramsey platinum 9500. ok enough of my opinion whats yours?

I run a Chicago Electric from Harbour Freight. It is identical to my buddies Ramsey 8000 in every way except for the name and the price which was $300 including shipping (they are $334 now) it even came with a mounting plate. I know there are more powerful and faster whiches out there but most of the time we use a snatch strap so the winch has only been used a couple of times.

That's a hard call for me since I don't have a winch yet. I have heard more good things about the Warn winches and am leaning in that direction though. The Warn HS9500i is only about 50 bucks more than the 9000 and has an extra 25' of cable.

You can look on the web at the different winch sites. When you decide which flavor winch you want you need to get one rated at 1 1/2 times the vehicle weight. That is unless ya want one of the bad boys like the Warn 15k that they just came out with. The weight of the winch is also a factor. Personally I have never heard anything bad about either one.

I have a dealer option ramsey 8000 on mine,I have used it a handful of times but as stated earlier typically its the snatch strap. The only drawback to it is that it is SLOW but it will pull 2 full size chevys thru the mud if anchored properly http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif . Brute force can be a beautiful thing.

Don't forget that if properly used a snatch block will double the pulling power at a great expense of speed. I like the security of having the winch but rarely use it. I generally use my 6" x 30' snatch strap (rated a 55000 lbs) as it is much quicker and less hassle ( winch is receiver mounted).

I bought the Ramsey REP8000 from thinkjeep.com for <$350 with shipping. It is every bit as reliable as the other winches that have been mentioned but it is considerably slower and not as pretty. You have to pay for speed and looks. I have seen the REP8000 winch for from $349 - 650.
All of the other posts are great advice

Jeepbob, is your jeep set-up to use the winch at both ends? if so, how do you like it? I think that I may eventually do that(when I get the Jeep together) and I wanted to find out if it was a good idea to mount the winch like that.

Currently it is not, but when my buddy gets done with my new bumpers it will be. Right now my winch goes in my trailer hitch in the rear. I used electric hi lo plug for the disconnect.

laydowns pull good but slow stand ups pull fast (warn 8274) is a hard winch to beat ive had both and i still like the 8274 im running a ramesy 9000 and a warn 9500 both seem the same if you were blind folded i doubt you could tell the diff but the 8274 you would know it flat winches single/double/triple line i think it is the best all around winch on the planet i still have the first one i bought in 1970 only thing i had to do was change the cable

I've been happy with my Warn XD9000. It's pulled full size trucks out of mud bogs where you couldn't see their 38" tires.

We have a Warn XD9000i on the Traveler and a 5000# on the trailer. I like the 9000 so much I want one for MY Jeep.
