View Full Version : My 4wd... I found the problem, how do I fix?

OK, I got under the beast, and looked at a few things. I found what is wrong I think. Going into the front differential there is a large vacuum hose, and then three small ones that have plastic connectors that are in a 90 degree shape. One is yellow and two are green, I think. Well, one of the green tubes is snapped right where it connects to the hose that goes to the diff.. These three tubes are grouped together in a covering and they go somewhere, but I couldn't see where. How would I replace this piece, and how do I get to it? Where would I get the replacement tube?
Thanks
Ted

Well, I don't need to remove that piece. I only need to replace one of the tubes. But I don't know how to get to it. I don't know where the other end of it is. Does someone know? And where would I find this tube?
Thanks

Hey Ted,
If the post the Coley sent you too doesn't confuse you enough then I'll add something here to make the confusion complete http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif...
Is that the metal tube that is broken ??
According to the book (factory service manual) there are three colors ( it's been a while since my 84 so my brain is kinda fuzzy here ) and the book shows the function clearly and the parts explosion clearly but the two diagrams don't fit together so clearly.
The front axle shows 2 red and one yellow going to it. The green line comes from the dash switch and runs to the 'MIDDLE" port on the transfer case vacuum motor. But the book may not reflect the real world - that depends on the mood of the guys on the AMC assembly line on the day they did yours - I saw some wierd stuff on my 84, they did alot on the cheap to try to keep the company afloat.
Anyway you are right that the x-fer case motor would not work if the front axle is not engaging. Coley said he found the "harness" for the front axle connection for $35 at JWJEEP.com (I think) but I am not sure thats where yours is broken. I have the 84 manual and although I don't have a scanner I could get the diagrams to you if you really needed them.
Basically the are three lines, the top connection on the axle goes to the bottom connection on the Xfer case, the top connection on the x-fer case goes to the bottom of the axle. the middle on both vacuum motors connect and go through the 2wd-4wd switch on the dash. the third connection on the dash switch goes to the "black ball" on the firewall which stores a little vacuum to operate the system.
Also now the your Wag is 3 inches taller those lines going to the front axle need to be longer so they don't get yanked next time you get air and the axle leaves the ground.
I saw the fix to your other problem - good deal - but the advice on the vacuum pump stands - with these beasts that pump has saved me alot of wondering if the vacuum part is functioning as it should.

Thanks for all of the help. I have an idea though. The break is pretty clean, and it is right where the tube comes out of the 90degree piece that directs them down to the differential. I was wondering if it would work to go get this thing I heard of that will join the two pieces back together. It's like two pieces that attach to each end of the broken tube, and then the fasten together to reconnect them. It's a quick fix, but it sounds like it will work pretty well. What do you think??

In the Help! section of Autozone, Pepboys, etc. they have all kinds of vacuum connectors exactly like you're talking about. Right now I have three of those connecting the three hoses to the solid rubber piece (the one that's held on by a bolt and connects directly to the metal vacuum lines that run to the t-case). I'll probably re-do it in the future, Reddog's brass tubing solution seems more stable, but for now it's working.
Hope I haven't confused you. Wish I had a digital camera!

Well, it worked! I am in full business now.
easy fix. I put that connector in and that was it. Scared me at first. Alot of grinding and wierd sounds coming from the transfer case/transmission. I don't know why, but hopefully it was just working out the kinks. Thanks for the help
