i'm always shaking my head at the jeep, saying 'why did they do that?'. well honestly its usually just about the stupid AMC motor but i don't have to worry about that anymore. :D anyway, the really cool thing i found was when i went to remove the front clip. the electrical for all gizzies on the front clip, i was worried i'd have to cut them out of the wire harness because they didn't have connectors by the fuse block. but it turns out after removing the bolt that holds all the wires into the back of the fuse panel the connector pulls apart into two pieces, one for all the front clip goodies and one for the rest of the electrical, so i was able to take the clip off without cutting a single wire. i thought that was pretty cool! finally i found something i can say "wow, what a great idea!" about.

anyway, maybe i'm just amused by the little things. but i just didn't expect such an easy way to get around that part of the wire harness! woo-hoo!

All worried about a wiring harness when all it takes is one wire to run a ch**y motor.

Well, technically, jumper cables are two wires. :D

Yes, very convenient. Too bad they didn't put wheels on the oil pan so you could easliy push the motor out to the curb for the garbage man. Or better yet, make the motors out of solid gold so you could actually get something for them. Ohh well...perhaps ford will learn from AMCs mistakes.

Front Clip Removal = Easy

Now the AMC engine comments are kind of confusing. Funny, I got 229K on my 88 360 before the lifters and cam flat wore out. The 401 in it now has well over 200K on it with a rebuild about 50K back and a fresh RV cam & lifters and TC set about 10K back when it went in. I find plenty other AMC to heritage Kaiser designs to scratch my head about. As far as I can tell, the AMC V8 engine was the best thing that settled under the hood of a FSJ.

Don't get me wrong, to each his or her own and you are welcome to your Chevy components and trying to remember which parts is parts down the line. :D

In your wanting to do a swap, in light of the now eternally soaring fuel prices, this may be a good time to consider going diesel. Also if you do the grease conversion you may never pay a red cent for fuel again. (Well almost never....)

Just this past Saturday I saw a Mercedes 300SDL that had this kit installed, and the owner has a few restaurants in the area more than happy to have him take the old fryolator oil away. Also the clattering sound normally associated with a diesel dies down to a minimum in burning grease, making the engine sound much like a gasoline burner. Only drawback was that the neighbor's dog got a whiff of the exhaust, and jumped the fence and came over looking for a handout.

I just like to push people's buttons about the AMC motor thing because people always seem to be down on anyone putting GM components in their FSJ. I'm sure the AMC motor is fine after you strip all the garbage off (smog, bad carbs and ignition etc). But, like you said...to each his own. You can have your carbed 140hp AMC 360, and I'll take my 300hp fuel injected GM 5.3 motor!

LOL! Yeah, I hear ya you Bowtie Rabble Rouser. ;) Except every FSJ I have driven the last couple years is 401 powered. That's good for another 55 hp right there, then the IFSJA sticker is good for another 8 hp, then the BJs Offroad sticker is good for at least 10 or 12 hp. :D Heck, just having a Quadratrac makes better HP. :p When you get up to 13000 feet they are all wheezing anyways, AMC, Bowtie, Mopar, it don't matter.

You DO realize that the wire harness was probably a mistake on the engineers part dont you? I mean, you dont think they'd build the entire rig and then stop to think about the front clip!?

The discussion:

Engineer Jeep: "Gee Full Size, I feel bad about building such a convoluted can on wheels...shouldnt we give the poor bum that works on this one gleaming chance of hope before it rusts to the ground?"
Engineer Full Size: "Yeah, lets give them a part of a cool wiring harness and see if that makes any difference in the rig's cool factor..."

A mistake I tell ya...

okay, it's just a Chevy engine. Let's see something cool..like a Ford 427 Cobrajet swap.

That would be a good swap, but they didn't make a 427 CobraJet, only 428 and 429 got that badge.

Of course the 427 SOHC would be the coolest of all ;)

Yeah, that's a nice little feature, and it likely grew from production line efficiency rather than any particular concern for later maintenance. Case in point: The only way to loosen the clamp on the rare & expensive special fuel tank intake hose on my '83 would have been to remove the body from the frame first. I'm sure that the thing was installed on the bare chassis, and it would have taken a few extra seconds for the line worker to turn it over and tighten it from below. This and myriad other bits like it is why I finally tore the silly thing all the way down and put it back together the way I wanted.

I don't have much of a problem with AMC motors. Sure they have their goofy points, but so do they all. I'm working on Dear Li'l Sis's Pontiac this weekend, and I'll have to pull the hood to get the distributor out.

Ted, you don't have to pull the hood on that Tin Indian if you don't mind doing a contortionist act to get to the dizzy. ;)

yeah thats what I meant :hide: :P

But really..I've never seen ONE Ford BB swap done here yet..I'd guess because they cost so much more to build up than rodent motors...

I kinda wish I could have 'liberated' the crate 351 with GT-40 heads my grandfather *gave* away when he sold his Mustang II Cobra last year for $1500 :banghead:

I thought someone had a 460 in a J truck on here.

Ouch Gramps gave that one away huh?

I almost went with a 429 in my j-truck but considering its weight and fuel mileage I went with the 351 cleveland instead. I'm glad I did because I drive the truck more than I ever thought I would but now I kind of wish I still had the 385 series tucked away for future use....

How about a OHC ~4.0L streight six, like a chevy Trailblazer motor?

(Oh, I forgot, Jeep did that 45 years ago :p )
