Just figured I'd give you guys an update on my latest project. I posted the initial 401 teardown a while back but haven't posted anything since. I had the machine work done at C-tech in Grand Rapids and did all the assembly myself. I'm hoping it gives the wagon a big kick in the pants. Here's the specs:
Bored .030 over
Polished crank standard/standard
Bushed rods
Keith Black 354 pistons
Full balance job (good to ~6500 rpm)
Zero decked block
Decked heads
Gasket matched ports
Polished exhaust ports
Polished and matched chambers (61 cc)
Stainless steel swirl polished valves
Comp cams Magnum 270 cam
RPM air gap intake
HEI distributor
Edelbrock ceramic shorty headers

It's going to see a little track time after break in, any guesses what it'll run in the 1/4?

 ah dang it. now i have to clean up my droil. that is one of the best looking motor that i have ever seen. it looks great. those were the same valve covers that i wanted to go with, but i thought it wouldn't be too good in my rig seeing how i drive it and get dirt everywhere.

Thanks guys! I'm just real excited to get it running and on the track. I'd still like to know what you guys think it'll run? It's going in a '76 Wagoneer with basically nothing on it. Manual everything, no a/c, no cruise, bench seats, etc. Basically as light as you can go without gutting it out. Th400/qtrac:rolleyes: and 3.54's with 275/60/15 (basically 28x10.5) on all fours. I'm considering going 2wd sometime in the near future but only time will tell. Anyhow, here's a few more pics of the engine pieces.

HEI distributor
What brand HEI distributor are you using?

The fan is from a mid 60's Impala I think. My Jeep originally had a flex fan and the chevy fan was laying around so I figured why not. The fan clutch is new from Bj's. The HEI is a Proform unit that I bought from SFBAYBOATER on the board because everyone was out of stock.
I got a lot done tonight as far as detailing and painting the engine bay. I'll get some pics of it when it looks presentable.

i'm a big fan of new shiny motor parts. what did you go with for pistons?

I went with the Keith Black hypers. They'll put my compression right at 9.5:1 with the work I did to the heads. The bad part is they use the smaller chevy pin so the rods need to be bushed for floating pins. It's not that expensive to have done though. And make sure to follow the instructions for the ring gaps or you'll break a ring land.

I hope after all that work you did the oiling mods. Otherwise 6500rpm is going to make that thing go boom :/

yeah that might not be that good, and a waste of a lot of hard work.

to run them at 6,500 rpm you should really consider going with some sort of girdle system for the bottom end. But, the engine looks sweet, sir!

We talked a lot about the oiling system when building this motor. We actually did do a lot of little things but not the bypass. From what I've read, most of the oiling mods (bypass included) in PAS are for sustained high RPM use and aren't necessary for short bursts. The bottom end is plenty strong for 6500 also, I am not worried about it. The cam I'm using won't make power quite that high anyways so it doesn't matter anyways. It's just good to know that if I over rev it I'm not going to hurt anything. Plus I'll be running a bigger cam in the future when I go to 2wd.

Little update, I've got the engine in and running. Did the break in and I've got about 15 miles on it now. I've still got quite a bit of cleaning to do under the hood so no pics for now. I did get some video of it running though. So far I really like the way it runs. I haven't jumped on it yet but it feels real strong. Here's the vids
