i was wondering if i needed a nv 4500 bell housing for the 454 / nv4500 transplant or if i could use the 465 bellhousing that came with the 454/465 package? i'm finding it difficult to locate the nv bellhousing right now. If I can use the 465 bell i would just use that and the pedels out of the 82 1 ton dually.... if not i have got to start the search again for the full setup....still trying to find the np 241 around here:(
As always,
Thank you for your time. and keep on :fsj:

No. also beware the nv4500 has a small bearing retainer 1992-94 (chevy only) and large 94+ (dodge and chevy) the early bell uses a different bolt pattern than the later. the later is setup for an internal slave. best bet spend $299 get the AA bellhousing and use a later model tranny parts are easier to get. syncros and gear parts for the 92-early 94 trannies are becoming hard to get as they were a short run with different gear ratios the later is a stronger setup with a bigger input bearing and retainer.

Thanks rusty, i thought i might just be spitting in the wind.... looks like i will just have to convert the 465 to 4x4 and run without an overdrive. but it is a Full Size Jeep, its not supposed to have good gas mileage... right?
Or.... are there any other easy OD tranny swaps that i should consider?

the nv-4500 is about as easy as it gets. You can use a Jeep t-176 bellhousing. it has been done, maybe that person will chime up I forget who it was.

what nv4500 do you have... the above mentioned the t-176 bell trick that works IF you find a 151 iron duke married to a t-176 that would give you the gm pattern then you can use a adapter plate and a 94/95 and newer nv4500 from a dodge or chevy with minor changes needing to be made to the chevy input bearing retainer. but the 465 bell is definately not a bolt in option onto a nv4500 but like i said before 300 will net you the right bell to tie a nv4500 to your 454 and it comes with the holes for a linkage to bolt up

CRAP, I was thinking using the T-176 bell to AMC pattern, I didn't realize he wants chevy on both sides. If ya want the nv4500 on a chevy motor, just use an OEM chevy bellhousing or get the $300 AA one that Dusty mentioned.
btw- That's a nice little tidbit about the iron duke and t-176 (if that works then a t4/t5 probably also does), I didn't even know that was a combo they used in production. I'll bet its not too common, but neat to know... If I ever see one i'll be sure to grab it.

Just thought I'd mention that the latter Chevy and Dodge NV4500s have different input lengths. The dodge requires a spacer since it is about 1/2" longer than the chevy.

chevy is 6.5" long dodge is 7.25" also dodge 1-1/4" diameter chevy is 1-1/8" in diameter

I think you should go with the 465. Have you read the NV4500 Mythology sidebar over at Novak's site? http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/nv4500.htm
With proper axle gearing you should be able to achieve just as good of gas mileage with 465 and have just as low of a first gear, unless of course you have the less common 6.34 version of the 4500, but even then the difference isn't much.
Plus the 465 is shorter, you can replace it for $100 buck, etc.

What is involved in changing the 465 to 4x4.... just the adapter and output shaft?.... i know i can find the np 205 adapter on the bay but where would i come up with the other parts?? local transmission shop? by the way the nv 4500 in the one out of 93-94 chevy....

IMHO, the sm465 is an inferior transmission, especially behind a big block. It has issues with the shift tower when they get worn, and 3rd gear synchro failures are common. I have two on my floor right now that have 3rd blown out, out of two different trucks. They are also quite noisy transmissions, which I don't really care for.
If you are going to the trouble of swapping a trans, and you have the resources, you might as well get the best one you can. The nv4500 is not a hard swap if you are putting in a chevy motor. use a chevy bell, hydro clutch, slave, and use a hydraulic chevy pedal, or go aftermarket for one like a wilwood or lokar pedal. you might also be able to use a jeep pedal from a t-176 equipped FSJ.
