I took the bezoar to a muffler shop today for a new muffler, thinking it would probably need the whole system. I could hear putting from the front of the system as well as from the muffler. Turns out that one of the bolts to the exhaust manifold was loose. That tightened, all we needed was from the cat back. I cannot believe the driveability improvement! The service manual says to make certain that there are no manifold leaks when troubleshooting stalling, exhaust backfire, hard starting when hot, and poor throttle response. I had all of these, now I have none. Just by tightening down ONE BOLT!! I guess this just goes to show that little things mean a lot and that we should tackle the less glamorous grunt work of tightening bolts and fixing vacuum leaks before blaming major component failures. I know I have come to appreciate this more in recent days.

Congratulations and of this you aint a kiddin'. You would not believe the difference in securing and sealing up this old beast, it was like night and day. Of course that's when I noticed that stupid ball & trunion joint on my driveshaft, which set in motion a host of other projects.

the other day I adjusted my timing to the specified -10° and changed the donuts, y-pipe and exhaust manifold gaskets. After all that I noticed a loss in power. changing the timing back only made it worse. thanks for the idea about the leaks, I'll check that tomorrow.

for what its worth, from my 10 years of professional service - even with all the high tech tools and information at your disposal I learned from an older tech that been around the block a time or two, ALWAYS start with the basics , a moving part will generally fail before a non-moving part will AND a good mechanic will always PROVE that the part needs to be replaced before replacing it, guessing is just that a guess

Hmm... these are all problems I'm having too. And I know I have an exhaust leak in the bay. I haven't plugged where the emissions stuff went...

Are you talking about the ports where the air tubes go? If so you should get them plugged up soon or all the exhaust valves will be cracked.
