Hello, this is my first post. I just got home with my new 1982 Cherokee. It has a brand new paint job, and runs. Seems like the carb needs to be gone through, and it needs a tune up. I got it for $1500.
Anyway, I am trying to figure out what t-case is in it. I think it may be a NP-229. It has the lever next to the drivers seat, and it has manual hubs. Can someone please give me more info? It has a 360 and auto tranny BTW.
TIA!

The only selector is down on the hemup next to the drivers seat.
With the shifter on the side it's the NP208 part-time x-case behind an AT(up through the trans tunnel behind a MT). The NP229 wasn't available in 82 and the only other x-case avail in 82 was the NP219 full-time x-case and it has the shifter straight up out of the tranny tunnel as the 208 w/MT does. You'll see the 208 refered to as the "Command Trac"
Be glad...the 208 is a good x-case and less grief than the 219/228/229's. smile.gif
Oh...and welcome to the forums!

Sweet. That is what I was hoping it was for sure. This truck is pretty much stock right now. I want to get some lift and put some 33s on it at least. I also have a 2001 Nissan Frontier that I off road and it's IFS is limiting my abilities. That is why I bought this truck when I found it. I want to make it my off road rig. Thanks for the welcome!

Thanks for the links! I just decoded my VIN and found out that it is a WT. This thing must have a bad case of Wag Sag, because the 235s that are on it, are about the biggest size that would fit. Just to confirm my research, if I do a 3" BL and 4" SL I should be able to clear 35s with room left over right? From all the stuff I have found out about my truck so far, it seems I got the exact model I would have chosen from the factory. Did all of the WT Cherokees come with Dana 44s front and rear?
D44 rears were on all 1/2 ton J-trucks, Wags and Cheros(WT or NT) till 1979. In 80 the J-10's, Wag's, Chero's (WT or NT) ran AMC20's till late 86 when the Wags' and J-10's went back to using D44's (FSJ Chero's were gone after 83).

If it's a wide trac, you will only need a 4" SL to clear 35" tires.

That is awesome. According to the VIN codes it is. So, can these axles handle 37s then with some new gears? smile.gif

Depends on how hard you beat on it. Anything larger than a 35's with the D-44's (or AMC 20) and eventually you will break. They may last quite a while depending on the true size of the 37 you run. Now if you are just gonna mall cruise, you will be alright. If you want piece of mind, at least put a D-60 in the rear and if you can get away with it, run a 14 bolt rear/D-60 front.

I will probably just get some 35s as soon as I can and hit the trails. I can't wat to get this thing off road.

Welcome to the board ChrisB, and another one from Ft. Worth at that. A couple of us are getting together this Sunday to run "The Quarry" on the north side of town. Check the events section for the details.

Ditto on the same set up.as mine.
Look at the rear axel to determine the gear ratio
hopefully the tag is still there.

Actually there is no tag on an AMC20. The ratio code is stamped into the flat boss next to the big dowel hole on the pass side of the diff casting. D is 2.73's, DD is 2.73's w/tracloc, B is 3.31's(that's what the book says but it may be a typo and should read C ???) CC is 3.31's w/tracloc.
