Hey guys and girls when I got my HEI from BJ"s it may have been drop shipped...Did they automatically have the right Distributor gear on it...Is there a specific way to install this distributor ??? The cap does not designate where #1 cylinder, and it won't go in. It starts to mesh with the cam gear and stops...It's on TDC #1...oil pump gears are not installed...I've installed lots of distributors in my time...just none were HEI..... Thank You, jim:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

are you lining up the oil pump slot so it can engage the distributor?
nevermind,your pump gears aren't in....

FYI, I'm pretty sure you have to swap the drive gear.
I did on mine and it went in fine...

Oil pump gears aren't even in...Distributor won't drop or (mesh) with the cam gear.
Most distributors (that I've done) You put #1 cylinder on TDC. Mark the dist housing where the #1 post is on the cap and insert so that the rotor points to #1 on the cap or the mark you made on the distributor.
As for setting it up when (if) I get it in. There is no #1 ???? Surely one of the cap posts is #1 ??? Someone please esssplain dis to me.

I've got a DUI-HEI in my J-10, and a Proform hei i'm installing in another engine, the washer or shim between the shaft and gear on my Proform doesn't stick out nearly as much as yours. Yours looks like it is as big in diameter almost as the gear, that might keep it from meshing all the way. You can use any tower on that distributor as the no.1 as long as you follow the correct firing order and your plug wires will reach, and of course you time it for that.

It's a full half inch from seating so...I don't think I'm even close to the washer yet...Zack's away so I'm hoping another member had a similiar problem.

Doesnt look like a ZM jeeps HEI issue it looks like a timing cover issue.

Why do you think its the timing cover? Is there a way I can check. I just stated the most obvious part...since the HEI is not a stock item for this engine.

I'm finally starting to surface from underground. Give me a call tomorrow night (5-9 pm) and we'll talk about it and see if we can't figure it out. Do you have a dial calipers or just a tape measure?

Hey man....I did have some problems with my gears meshing up. Please tell me you bought matched gears or re-used some that are known to have ran together. My understanding is that some of these gears don't match up with each other unless they are a "matched set". I also had a problem with an aftermarket timing cover.... Things didn't go together right so I put it on a CNC at work and indicated the pot where the distributor seats and compared it with the stock one...it was out something like 70 thou. Just my 2 cents....good luck!!

70 Thousands! That's crazy!
There is a serious lack of Quality Control somewhere!!!

No Ken, I didn't have a matched set of gears....I purchased a stock distirbutor to try out and it won't drop either!:( So I'm ordering another timing cover and a matched set of gears....Hopefully this will show me what the issue is...besides straight up frustrating....I don't believe it's the HEI...It's either the Timing Cover or the cam gear....hopefully I'll know when UPS arrives. Thanks everyone
