Need help guys, going this aft'noon to look at a 79 J10 with a 4-speed. Guy says it just needs carb work, wants $600 or best offer. Is the T18 the 4-speed of choice in the 79?? wht about the xfer?? D20?? any info you can give me would be great. :D :D

Could be a good find! *Should* be a T-18 with a Dana 20 if it is an original '79. Don't think anything else was offered that year. The T-176 *didn't* start production until 1980.

If it has a cast Trany and cast T-case and is a 4 spd, it will be the T18 and D20. I would be sure that truck has a T18 and D20 unless it was swapped. Anything else used would be aluminum cased ;)

Thanks for the replies buys, but I found a magical 79 J10 today...when I went to look at it it magically turned into a 78 right from the go...then the 4-speed magically turned into a 3-speed. And the "just inspected" condition magically turned into the "body from hell" There is no way this truck just passed PA state inspection  there were holes in the body big enough to put my fist thru without!!! touching metal   Got half a mine to report that inspector to the PA State Police. Oh well :( IF anybody needs a decent drivetrain, the motor sounded strong and the tranny and xfer seem to work ok. The carb needs adjusted or rebuilt or possible choke set, as it idled rough til warmed up.

I feel your pain. Just went through the same thing on a parts rig. Luckily found out before I went to pick it up. Another one of those bright guys that counted four gears but that included reverse.

Good luck with your search. I'm continuing mine as well.

You didn't note what engine?

'78 was a "very" good year! smile.gif I'm biased though. If that had a 4 speed, it would have been worth it. The 3's are great trannies, but that granny low 4 is "very" nice to have! Bummer it's not in better shape. If he'd give it to me, I'd take it off his hands....heeeheee! smile.gif

i also feel your pain.we went to look at a 4wd burb the other day.it supposedly was from arizona, and didnt have much of anything wrong with it. it also turned out to have rust(from arizon/! guess it had been in ohio long enuff ;) ),it had mice living in it(and we dont want to go there ;) and end up shooting up the engine cmpt :D ).and it also somehow no longer had a title when we actually got there.oh well.easy come, easy go.

The engine was a 360 that sounded like it had alot of life left in it. Idled a lil rough on startup(dont they all :D ) until it warmed up and the tranny shifted fine. The D20 shifted a tad hard but the owner said he hadn't used 4wd in about 6 years  It would be ok for someone that needed a drivetrain but the body is shot!
