Greetings....
When cold (not "cold" but sitting overnight) my '86 takes a while to shift into reverse. First nothing, then it slips a little, then it fully engages. When warm, it's not a problem, shifts forward and reverse are fine.
It has 150k miles.
Any ideas?

Had the same problem recently with my J-10. It was low on AT fluid. The reason it was "low" was the tube running to the radiator was laying on the front differential and had worn a small hole in it. It was an easy fix and cheap. My first guess would be to check the fluid.

Thanks for the response. Fluid level is okay when checked (hot). It's been a while since the tranny has been serviced though...

Might be a partially clogged filter. This condition happens with low fluid alot, clogged filter may cause the same, or dirty fluid.

If my Jeep can't get me where I want to go the way it sits, then I need to modify it some more (So far it has). After all, Jeeps owners can do anything!

While you are changing the fluid, adjust the bands. As the bands wear the servos must travel farther to engage them and sometimes hang up a little, causing slow engagement.

Also, If I'm not mistaken(please correct me if I am) the 727's torque converter can drain and until you take the tranny out of park the pump doesn't pump. I have the same problem with mine. Both this and my old jeep did this. My drive also is slow now and then.

as long as the engine is running the pump is pumping. The only diff between p and n is p has a lock to keep the tranny output shaft from moving.

This is true of GM auto trannies as far as I know, but are you sure about the Mopars, Bob? I'm pretty sure I've heard that in "P" the fluid is not pumping in the 727s. I KNOW this is true of some other Mopars(particularly the A413 in my pluggermobile). I did a FULL flush of the fluid and it was clearly not pumping in "P".....but did in "N". BTW...I agree on the filter/fluid/bands suggestion further up.....definitely worth doing on ANY tranny that hasn't had that done recently!
