Can these cause slight slipping if out of adjustment? It does not slip in reverse, but it slips a little when accelerating. If it is not the bands then I guess it is time for a rebuild. Since I am lacking the tools needed for this job, how much should I expect for one of these?

Any thing else that might cause slippage. The tranny shifts very smooth.

It is a TF 727.

It don't take much to adjust the bands. If you can change the trany oil and filter you can do the band adjustment at the same time. All you need is a tourqe wrench that measures inch pounds.

The filter and fluid are brand new. No more than a month old. I did use a tranny cleaner about 2-3 weeks ago. Lucas tranny oil. I have heard that this can kill a tranny after I used it. Is it possible that it could have cleaned off all the old gunk and caused the filter to clog???

Oli Pressure is good.

Thanks guys...

WHAT YOU DID WAS MAY BE OK..BUT I THINK YOU WOULD STICK THAT STUFF IN THEN AFTER YOU WOULD RUN IT FOR SOMETIME..THEN DO THE FLUID-FILTER THING!!!!...GET A REPAIR MANUAL AND INCH POUND TORQUE WRENCH..GIVE THAT A TRY... ..LIKE IR SAID!!! smile.gif

Ok, I am going to change the fluid and filter, and adjust the bands. I have read the Haynes manual and it seems easy enough. I just hope that it does not make it worse. Wish me luck.

Ok, update...

I dropped the pan I it is full ok small black flakes. I am assuming that this is dirt and grime that the Lucas removed. I did not see any metal. The magnet had the normal small amounts of tiny filings. The filter needs to be changed. Could this cause the slipping?

If so would it also mean the the fluid in the torque converter would also have the flakes and need to be changed?

Update Number 2

It did not fix the problem.

I guess I will have to go with a rebuild.. :(

But I have wanted to rebuild it anyway... smile.gif

What do you mean by "FULL" of black flakes? This happened after you changed the filter and put some cleaner in the trany? If so, how many miles did you run it with the cleaner? Did you adjust the bands? How much did they need? Sorry it didn't work out but a good trany rebuild sounds like good training. I have one in my parts rig that I will test my hand at some day. Good luck.

A 727 is not a difficult transmission to rebuild. I just finished rebuilding the donor one now that the original is back in my GW. I am spoiled/cursed by a visit from the evil Snap-On truck every thursday morning at work, and splurged, yet again on all the tools I needed to do the rebuild. Including a Snap-On inch-pound torque wrench, the special 5/16 square socket you need to turn the adjusting screws for the bands, 4 pairs of retaining ring pliers, 2 funky special seal/ring tools, I was only out $300 bucks from Snap-On. That means that you could probably buy all the tools you need for about $100 elsewhere. Give it a shot, I bought a donor trainy for $100 nucks, slapped it in, drove on it while I rebuilt the original and then went from there. :D

Just my two cents worth:The black flakes are probably from the lining inside the torque.Sometimes tranny flushing machines make things worse because the cleaning solvent tends to wipe the paper material off the clutches which is not good.A rebuild maybe in the future.

Ok, Now I know where the black flakes were from. That makes sence to me. It does feel like the clutch is going out. I did not know about the lining on the cluth. Thanks for the conformation.
