my Dad used to nickel plate stuff..seen his stuff 25 years later (guns)..no tarnish. Granted guns aren't engines but..I wouldn't paint it :o If it ever started flaking, even clear coat, it'd look like CRAP. If the plating is porous or rough, maybe smooth it out a little with a buffer pad on a dremel so the gunk (if you have any) doesn't build up in it..but the plating should be smooth and fine as is. Shoot once all your accessories are on there, you won't be seeing much of it anyways...

just my 2 cents..

You have the holy grail of AMC timing covers/oil pumps!! Do not coat or cover that beauty with anything!!!! It is rare and tough!!!

jeepsr4ever, if you make cover plates for all the sealing surfaces, you can hav it powdercoated. Oh wait Summit and sears sell home powder coating rigs, and a t/c is small enough to fit in an oven.

Nickle is used as an anti-corrosive coating and is tough stuff. It should be just fine. That sure is pretty. I picked up one of their nickle-coated thermostat housings and it looks pretty good, too.

I think the nickle will protect the water pump ports from electrolesis.

i wouldn't paint it or clear coat it. seeing that it is nickel coated alum, it will help to disapate some of the heat fromt eh coolant, even though its not a lot of space.

and besides, it looks really cool.

Sorry Dave. I think you should leave it like it is. However, make up some kind of crate base so it won't tip over and mount on a 2'x4' plexiglass top to the intake and use it as a coffee table or something that can always be seen. Would make for a great conversation piece and no one can argue that it's not art. Way too pretty to hide away under a hood!

It will hold up great! Ni is known for its abrasion and corrosion resistance. It will help from electrolysis and resist any coolant grooves from cavitation.

I wondered too. My guess is that it was moved because you used the vendor name in the title line? May have gotten whisked away without even being read to see what it was about or who it was from. I agree, it's buried here. :(

The answer to your question is NO you cannot succesfully paint over a Ni plated surface. It is very corrosion resistant and paint resistant. You would have a very hard time prepping that cover for paint. The time it would take to sand off that Ni would be tremendous. You can paint it only to have the paint flake off later. Hope this helps.

I don't have to much to do with this section, though I did offer some ideas and gathered some Vendor input to see what would help this section. In a round about way that is happening.
As far as moving any and all threads praising, complaining, tech or FYI on ANY Vendor products to the Customer Corner in the Vendor section, it is simply where it belongs, and should be posted there in the 1st place. If members that have anything to post about Vendor service and products would start their threads in the correct section, being HERE....... It is the hopes of the Moderators that this would HELP vendors with the low traffic that frequents this section. If you would all use this section as it was intended it would HELP the VENDORS!!!!! OK one more time now:

If you would all use this section as it was intended it would HELP the VENDORS!!!!!

So far I deleted only one ignorant post on this thread, input is always welcome, so feel free. Those that post negative or posts that are disrespectfull to the mods who are really trying to make this board work for everyone, your posts will be deleted.
