I picked this 79 J 20 last week for a good price. the man told me it was stuck in emergency drive. I thought it might be the glove switch or the vacum diapham. I was wrong as you will see in the pics below. The case end cap inside the T case was wrenched of in pieces and the shift fork was broke. plus alll the the little chunck's of metal everwhere. I called Baybilly and would you believe he has a whole t case with the reduction gear He's a lfe saver. thanks Baybilly You the Man

Like E.T. said in the movie, "....Ouch..."
It looks like your other case is salvage-able, yes? Get a new cap on that diff and the other shifter fork parts and you'd have a nice spare.

A good thing his brackets look cleaner than his QTs!! :D
Watch the breather hole and the input shaft hole, but hit it with a pressure washer before you install it! ? I'd also put a new seal kit in it. Easy to do and you can check out the diff while you're in there. Just DON'T FORGET to tighten all the bolts on the diff cap before you re-install it. AMHIK.

Ask Me How I Know.
As in, make sure you tighten the bolts on the differential caps because *I* didn't and ruined a perfectly good case and case cover.
Not a dumb question at all. There are WAY too many acryonyms flying around the 'net and I'm just as guilty of perpetuating them. :D
I can't see how the shift work would have broke like that. VERY odd. Something else must have broken or twisted/bent in order to put that kind of stress on it.
