Hey All,
I have had no luck with the last 3 engines I have had with oil pressure. The last one I put in was from Hari and said it was a good runner. RMS leaked like a siv and finally got it running today. No more leak but it knocks like no other and not a drop of oil pressure. I'm pretty pissed. right now. I have one more engine to get this POS up and running.

Anyone want to help on an engine swap next weekend? I need a lift :)

Fist off, I feel your pain. Buying used motors is such a crapshoot. And you never really know if they are any good untill you spend the time to install and get them running.

Secondly, I gotta ask...why do most people here act like it is some kind of atrocity to run a Chevy motor in an AMC? I'm kinda new to the whole FSJ thing but I had no qualms about yanking out the 360 and dropping in a 5.3. I don't see hotrodders and the aftermarket jumping on the AMC engine bandwagon so what am I missing?

like cats, if you spend enough time around FSJs, they inject little parasites that make you stupidly loyal to them :D

Wow that's a huge drag!! If it's knocking then I guess there isn't any oil pressure. :( I was going to say the oil pressure senders on these are not often to be trusted. Seems weird that there'd be no oil pressure.

There is something to be said about knowing a lot about the motor you're getting... I think engine replacements are a crapshoot. I got REALLY lucky because I know Norm personally and know how well he takes care of his vehicles, so I knew I was making the right move in getting that 360 from him. It runs awesome and has plenty of power and oil pressure (with a relatively new sender).

Rebuilds can crap out too. That's why I put in Norm's motor... rebuilt motor never had any power, and after I did a few intake replacements, I think the paper gasket leaked and dumped coolant in the oil not to mention the many leaks on the motor after only maybe 20k miles. :( That was a lot of money wasted.

One of the guys on the CFSJA list pointed us to a place in Oklahoma that gets motors out of wrecked new vehicles (they can't sell them new after wreck so they write them off, this place gets the drivetrain). He put a Vortec motor in his TJ along with trans for like $3000 ? Which is only a little more than my engine rebuild. So you get a new EFI motor with only a few miles. It's probably a lot of work to get wiring right, but to me I think that and the cost would be more likely to be worth it in the end. But of course there's lots of research to do there.

You might think about shopping around for a donor FSJ with a strong motor but other flaws. That way you KNOW what you're getting, motor wise.

I can definitely understand your frustration, believe me. I went thru a similar thing.. put in a 360 I paid too much for that was supposed to be great, but RMS was POURING oil, and was never able to get it to stop leaking, then had my orig motor rebuilt (instead of a 401 *sigh*) and so forth. Went thru similar with trans.

So I'm on engine #3 ... lucked out... I might just keep it. I'm at that point where if it works I am afraid to mess with it since I've got plenty of things that don't work that I need to fix.

I do have Ethan's lift if you want to ask him to borrow it...

That bites, but makes you think you are going to have better luck with a chevy?

i've got a 360 here i'm not using if you wanna give it another go. I wont make any promises about it so you dont feel disappointed, lol. oil looks good, not a leaker, and its CHEAP!

not sure what gsmikie was suggesting, but I wouldnt put in a toyota supra motor! (thats what that link goes to??)

I have a real bolt in dana 60 for a waggy if anyone in CO wants to buy it, its the correct dodge one and I know its a bolt in because its actually IN my jeep.

Ya nothing like getting an 80 in a 55, there's the money for the flexplate.

Was that the motor out of Molly? (Art's old truck) What's knocking? I'd fix the rear main and see where it goes from there.... <shrug>

3 in a row, wow, I feel for you.

My eBay special running engine ended up being full of water, I threw in the towel and ordered a boat load of parts from ZMJeeps and I'm doing a full rebuild. Engine has been cut and bored and now my guys waiting for me to get him a cam.

After the money and labor spent on the last 3 I would just bite the bullet and build one. Sometimes people can get lucky with a used motor but if your luck is anything like mine you're not one of those people.

Good luck!

Spent a few hundred on a parts rig years ago mainly to get the 360 to swap into the 258 powered J truck. It had sat for about 5 years because he couldn't pass emisions. (he really should have tried putting a catalytic converter on it instead of the duals and glass packs.)

I pulled the valve covers front cover and oil pan, put in new gaskets and rear main seal and cleaned as much sludge as I could get to from the motor. Then it sat for another 4 to 5 years. Finally got everything sorted out last year. Took it through emmisions testing and passed on the first try.

I have been driving it a couple of times a week, and it starts right up, no knocking or strange sounds,

I guess it must be the luck of the draw,,,,,,or maybe the air is too dry up there.
