Prev. owner of my j10 took out the L6 258 and dropped in a '74 amc 304 v8. I did a little search and found that that motor stock put out 150 hp. I'm debatting on whether or not to buld up that one or move up to the 360. Did some more searching and found a perf. engine shop in TX. that took a 304 and juiced it up to 375 hp @5500 rpm and 410 Ft # torque at 2500 rpm. Sounds acceptable but if I want more would it be worth spending the time and effort ?

if you're going to spend the time & money, might as well get the best you want and can afford, and do it once. If you build the 304, you can make them to have some decent power / torque. But, eventually you'll probably be wishing you went a little farther and went with the built 360.

304s are not bad but go with a 360. you'll be happier in the long run

go with the 360, they are really easy to find, and you can have it built while you are driving around with the 304

Always remember, there's no replacement for DISPLACEMENT! Now, go find yourself a 401 and really put a smile on your face. You'll be glad you did.LOL

Ditto the 360 or better yet 401. Cute idea to take a small engine and make it put out huge HP and torque, but it will only do it for so long before going to pieces. Better to keep it honest and go for the beef.

I think you hit the nail on the head with that one. I was raised by my parents to make the most of what you have so I guess I just needed to be reminded that I'm a big boy now. I was thinking bout 401 but my 76 wag had the 360 and it did great and after I build it I can always recoupe some of the costs buy selling my existing motor.....or hang on to it just in case
