View Full Version : Georgia State Inspection & Emissions test... Bushwood is nervous...

He's never had to pee in the cup.
Seriously - After all of the work to the Jeep I can still smell the exhaust if I let it sit in one place. I've got the new motor, new cat', rebuilt carb' and all of the emissions crap hooked up but for some reason, I can't imagine him passing.
Is this a test I should be concerned about? Are any shops "less strict" than others?
Thanks!

I don't live in Georgia but when the Rockwagon used to show up for inspection with a wore out 360 it always passed with flying colors.

Didn't you have Bushwood registered in VA? If so you can always leave it there and ;) 'borrow' ;) it from its ;) Virginia ;) owners. That'll buy you enough time to figure the situation out.
I had friends drive that way for over year before. The best one was a buddy who kept his Canadian registered Jetta in Richmond, VA for over 2 years ... all with a VA license.
Of course, I'm not sugessting doing anything illegal or anything. Especially not on a public forum.

Manhattan:
For an '88 based in Atlanta metro area (21 counties), you'll have to have original equipment smog parts all hooked up, and it'll have to be tested on a dyno--the real deal for smog nazi's! Red Wag passed the first time out after rebuild (with all airtubes, new cat, new egr valve, new check valves, etc). By the second test 7 months later, the old dog failed on NOx, which is what the egr controls. Turned out my only problem was a bad vacuum line to the egr; it was not opening all the way. Good luck, CR

I was fortunate to pass the GA test about 6 weeks ago but that was the day before the new test came into effect.
I didn't have much hope because I had just started working on it. It was running very rough, and I could smell a lot of gas in the exhaust. I was shocked when it passed.
I'm not sure if the new test is supposed to be more strict or is just different.

Hey Manhattan - ooo boy.... I went to the sniffer 3 times before I got my '88 GW to pass. Sorry to tell ya.
Mine turned out to be vac and idle solenoid problems but now that I have them licked it'll prolly be o.k. Right?
BTW- if ya don't pass the first time your second test is FREE - just bring along reciepts for any parts you buy or work done on it.
Lemme know if ya need help.
Good luck!!!

Ummm...uggghhh...I just may have a connection. Try to pass, if you absolutely cannot, lemme know. I would take you there first time but I don't want to use up ALL of my favors. But a friend in need would certainly qualify. I need to make sure the connection is still there though, haven't pulled that string in a while.
There is also some fuel additives that supposedly work miracles. It's pretty cheap, I'd put that stuff in for the first test.
Hey Charles,
You said Manhattan had to have all of the smog equip to pass, did they do a visual on you? Another one of my Jeep buddies passed last year with a new cat but a non-functional air pump. He just barely snuck by, though he did use the additive.
By the way, I thought the "new test" only affects newer vehicles. I'm pretty sure us FSJ'ers won't have to worry about that.

Brad:
They put Red Wag on a dyno...honest! With all the stuff hooked up, we were still close on the Nox, so Manhattan needs to make real sure he has all the vacuum tubes to the egr valve up to snuff. Other than that, she passed with flying colors...even with the rebuilt 2150!
Can't wait til 7/13 for some of that smoked butt! send details on your location when you get a chance.

Wasn't doubtin' ya Charles, I thought you were saying they did a visual check to verify all of the stock equip. was there. Did they, and is that part of the "new" insp?
I'll post the directions soon, I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully, I can fix the fan turning on the windshield wipers tonight!

Some states don't test for emissions at idle, but are concerned only w/ emissions at speed on the dyno. What's rancid & choking at idle can be fairly clean at speed.

If you have to go back the second time for the freebee, make sure you tell them you are there for the free one. I failed the first time, second time I passed but didn't show him my receipt until afterwards because of his computer he would have to run it over again, that time I failed! I came back the next day and passed. He told me, which worked both times, to really run it hard before coming in. I think idling through the second test screwed me over.
Get out of the smog nazi counties. All that was in Gwinnett, I later moved over the line in to Hall and no longer had to deal with that crap. Now I am in Florida and they abolished it last year.

Manhattan,
If you fail the test, I can get you passed. I just installed a fuel injection system on a 1989 Grand Wagoneer in Atlanta last month and the customer passed with a bad catalytic convertor. I posted his test results here on this forum about a month ago. I install my systems and completely go over your emissions systems for $200. I am only 120 miles from Atlanta and make trips up there frequently to the U-Pull-It junkyards.
I can give you the Email of my customer if you want to converse with him. He is a Fulton Co. sheriff's office detective.
