sorry, old paraphrased Boomtown Rats reference.
I've fixed my stalling problems...turns out the repair I did on the coil connector didn't hold. Now I have another issue, one that just cropped up this morning. My tranny is shifting WAAAAYYYY too soon, like 3rd gear @ 20 mph! If I get on the gas, it won't downshift. Instead, the motor just pings like crazy.
I had the fluid completely flushed and refilled, but I didn't drop the pan or change the filter. Would doing that help? I really can't swing a tranny rebuild right now!
Side note: the engine idles great, very smooth, and when I gas it in park it revs just fine. At first I thought this was a misfire/hesitation problem, but it's isolated to the tranny.

Have you messed with your carb lately? Even if you haven't, you might want to adjust your throttle linkage. That bolt could have backed out on its own or a spring could have broken. It's worth checking out. If you have a Haynes manual they have a good section on it under the transmission section.Tom Collins also did a good write up on it in the tech section. (http://www.ifsja.org/tech/transmission/727adj.shtml)If all that seems right, the filter is an easy enough job and could hold the solution to your problem.

I had a problem with mine not downshifting at all. It turned out to be the shift linkage from the carb to the tranny. I tightened it up a little and it downshifts perfect now. It takes about 2 minutes to inspect and about 5 to adjust.

Oops, I spoke too soon. The engine problems are back, complete with extremely rough engine performance *only in gear!* and stalling. I got kinda bent driving back to work, as the thing almost stalled *again* at a traffic light. Anyway, I gave it a healthy shot of gas on the theory that maybe it would make me feel better (stupid, I know). A LARGE cloud of black smoke issued from the tailpipe, and the engine's performance didn't improve.
Here's a recap:
*no power
*rough idle in gear/stalls out
*strong hesitation and drop-outs when driving
*shifts into 3rd at around 20 mph--lots of ping
*I've flushed and refilled the tranny, have not yet replaced the filter
*coil connection was bad, I fixed it.
*used a full can of carb/choke cleaner in and around carb to no avail.
*when it stalls, restarts are EXTREMELY difficult and when the engine fires it continues to try and die/stall
Anybody have anything to help?

I'm thinking that you have a leak in the vacuum line that goes to the tranny. When I got my rig there wasn't a line going back there at all. Darn thing shifted into 2nd at about 15 and 3rd at about 20. I had all the excess vac ports on the carb blocked off so I didn't have the engine probs that you do.

Sounds like you got a bad vacuume line, a blown powervalve, and a bad throttle linkage. Fun, fun, fun.
