Apparently they still produce the XJ in China, a friend was telling me about it. Can't find alot that isn't in Japanese but still some pics on the site. Cool grille. Apparently they beleive that it is "perfectly engineered".

Some reading:

"American Motors established the first automobile manufacturing joint venture in the People's Republic of China to assemble the four-door Cherokee. Production continued after Chrysler's buyout (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buyout) of AMC. The current model is known as the Jeep 2500 (Link to Jeep in China (http://www.jeep.com.cn/jeep2500/home.html)). It is AMC's original Cherokee design with an updated grille and new headlights, as well as other upgrades. A masterpiece of automotive design (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automotive_design), the Cherokee continues to sell virtually unchanged after over twenty years."

what is so freaking stupid is that they dont sell them HERE anymore... hmmmm stop producing one of the top selling vehicles EVER built... sounds great, then give us the "liberty".... man i wish they had the xj back here.. the little woman runs a last year production xj since new and it has been a wonderful rig... no problems at all

I have shared that info with some Jeepers around here and there would be some serious marketing opportunuites if Jeep would sell those here. Maybe if they can unload the Diamler Chryco dung from their pockets, they could look at doing something like that. :D

....and the beat goes on....

Willys made the old utility wagon under "Rural Willys" in Brazil for a long while after the model stopped here. And only a handful of people lamented the model's passing on to foreign lands. The "death" of a good model in the US is due to our general idiocy in that we are convinced that we must have a "style change" every now and then.

Most of the SUVs of today look as if a steamroller started to ride up their backsides, and have nowhere near the dignity in styling of earlier models.

I drive my SJ with pride, as it has far more class than any Hummer. I also drive my old MB with pride, as the newer MBs all look like Ford Tempos, and have no dignity in styling whatsoever.

I hate to be a party pooper here, but when some designer gets a bee in their bonnet about some ridiculous new "pinch-assed" SUV, with the kind of rear visibility that leads to children being backed over and killed by their parents in their own driveway, someone needs to come up behind that ree-tard designer with a blackjack and.....

There were some issues with some of the later run XJ's after DC starting using their own rear axles etc in them and sales dropped but still it was probably the best selling car the US auto market ever had. If they would still be building them here and use the VM dsl motor they used in the Euro built XJ's I would consider buying one.

I like the way the intergrated the front end look of the Grand Cherokee and those ugly tail lights of the Liberty. I still love those XJ's. I had an 87 and when I sold it, it had 198,000 miles and still ran like a top
