It's got issues.
So I get to work today and I'm excited because I get to hear if the '79 I want is exactly what I want, what kind of condition its in etc.
My mom calls and tells me shes found an '89 cherokee,
the engine looks really clean, it runs like silk on the road, probably needs a paint job.
I told her that I was waiting to hear about the '79 - that I really do love the FSJs -
I told her that I felt pressured and didnt want to make a decision.
so she gets all huffy about how I never trust her to make decisions and I'm only going to get 7mpg and blah blah blah, so I finally got tired of arguing and made a rash decision.
I told her to jsut buy it, i figured at the least i would have a driver.
so then she gets it home....
the engine is "clean" despite the I6 rear main seal being notorious for never failing to leak.
The tilt steering colomn locking pin is either broken or the bolts have backed out and made it loose or something... the end result is that the column goes up and down but does not lock...
the drivers side vent window is missing...
the blinkers dont work.
and when you try them they turn of fhe radio...
the ac fan ran for awhile then stopped.
ac needs charged.
and I paid 1400 for it...
I got off the phone with the guy with the 79 cherokee - it was waxed every 6 mos untill it was parked. the interrior is good except a smal rip on the seat,
the engine was rebuilt, there are 93k original miles, not sure how many since rebuild...
the drive train was serviced and re vamped before it was parked,
and it has a brush gaurd, white and black paint
Quadratrack transfer case with high low switch in the glove box
good tires
only thing that needed work was the transmission re-seal
and he wanted 1250.00
I'm optimistic about the XJ but I sure do want the chero.
if I can get it working the XJ may be coming with me to Ouray. already made my reservations. spot 29.
BLAH
if its not an easy fix I'm not lettign her hear the end of it....

Same thing,kinda, happened to me.
I wanted to find what I wanted, with the drivetrain I wanted.....but got pushed into a white and tan '80 Ford Bronco because.....well,stubborn is stubborn and some people don't listen.
Paid WAY to much for the Bronco, but the thing got me to hell and back over the 4 years I drove it. I had to really lean into it around corners at speed to get the little 31"tires to break loose with the little 2bbl carb'd 351M.
I never got into a stuck I couldn't get out of (even the time I had to swim through a puddle of goo to get my 4wheel drive working......because I forgot to lock the hubs in :p)
I hated that **** truck, even when it was saving my ***
Big ,slow,ugly POS
Yea,I'll get it back one of these days and build it right:)
If the Cherokee is 4wheel drive, give it a chance. It just might grow on you.

Sounds like the XJ is an outstanding deal and exactly what you need....
...and since you didn't pick up the FSJ how about a phone number for it?:D

Bummer. I bought my first FSJ without ever driving it first. I saw it on the lot, made sure that the train layout I had @ the time would fit in the back, and had my dad test drive it the next day. He said it was good, so we bought it. :D

get your $$ back and go buy the FSJ.

Some states have a lemon law. If you think the seller took advantage of your Mom then you can dispute the buy and get your money back. I know when I sold my POS Dodge I had to identify every problem with it on the proof of sale to avoid the lemon law coming back to me.

Trent - do y'all have a 3 day right of recission there in AZ? If you don't know, ya might ask. Some states I have lived in have that for vehicle purchases. All Jeeps leak a lil sumpin sumpin, so just carry extra with you if you keep it. You are on the KOA map, so the Pinto is your backup plan right?
Now, if you head after the 79, be aware the glove box vacuum switch is for Emergency Drive (Jeep coined that). It is for full time/4 wheel lock shifter. The low range shifter would be on the floor on left side of tranny hump just under the front of the driver seat.

I'm not friggen rich or anything, but how hard would it be to get both? I've bought and sold a lot of cars, and I have had people hold cars for me and I've done it for people. When someone is enthused and excited about a car I have put a lot of sweat(and blood) into, I would rather sell it to him than some guy who wants to use it ram his neighbors Cadillac out of the way when its in front of his house. I know 1200.00 wouldn't solve too many of my problems right now, so unless the guy is strapped I would see if he would work with you, as long as you can manage it. I looked at a 61 Chevy wagon while on a camping trip in Utah. The guy was the original owner, and it needed some work. On my way out of town I was getting gas and these kids pulled up next to me. They were glad I didn't buy it because the big fair was coming up and they wanted it for the demolition derby! I turned around and offered the guy a down payment and picked it up 3 weeks later. Of course, those were probably his grandkids at the gas station setting me up...

good point. If you cant get your $$ back, flip the XJ at a quick loss (say a grand) and go buy the FSJ.
People have done worse things to procure an FSJ, no shame in losing a little cash :D
if its a FSJ that you want, an XJ is not going to suffice. when my j-10 has issues or is parked for the winter i borrow the rents 2001 cherokee and other than it gets almost double the MPGs (20 vs 13), its a PITA to drive vs. the J-10. the j-10 is spacious and cool, the cherokee is cramped and ordinary. the j-10 handles much better, too.
if you dont need a DD vehicle 'yesterday' then i would dump that lemon you bought and wait for a FSJ.
you should be able to find plenty of nice trucks in AZ. perhaps you just need to wait it out.

Congratulate your mom on HER new purchase of the XJ and go buy YOURSELF the 79!

I think that's the best advice so far!! Good luck. It's never easy to 'settle' for less than you wanted.

11 miles per gallon to be exact.
By the way I stopped listening to my mom long ago.

Yeah I'm usually pretty good about asserting my self with just about everything, but I just got tired of hearing her tell me i didn't trust her and i was making a bad decision. She's been against me getting an fsj just because she says anything over like 10 years old isn't reliable... yeah... that's her. I'm sure you all know someone of the same type. but, being 20, in college, and her holding the check book... I'm sure you can see where I'm going,
The pinto is out of the picture, the c3 blew coming up the mountain last weekend, i think its missing like 1st and second.... rpms gotta be high just to get it going, then its drives fine, but then again I font want to drive it to Colorado and find out i cant get the darn thing home, it was my first car, only paid 100$ for it and it ran and drove.
as far as the XJ goes, found out its fuel injected and not carbureted, a plus, and my future step father is going to take it to the dealership he works at and see if they cant cut me a deal on some off hours work and a bumper to bumper.
Called the gentleman about the Cherokee, he wont take payments but he will take a deposit. so I may be able to buy the Cherokee after all :p just depends on how much overtime i can get in the next two weeks.
rest assured I will be taking care of the Cherokee myself, I'll take my buddy's truck and tow it to aamco and have them do a full diagnostic and bumper to bumper.
unless anyone knows of a place closer to 50th + cactus in phoenix.
and I should know what condition the Cherokee is in tonight, my mom's fiancee is going over to have a look at it for me. they don't know I plan on buying it though.
but until then i get to drive the '03 exploder sport. it fun and I don't plan on returning it clean... it should rain in the next couple of days :)
but regardless, I will be at Ouray, jeep or pinto or some other form of transport!

I would especially return it clean! If your soon to be step pappy is checking out the Cherokee, there must be a reason for it. While you're returning it, I would probably take out the trash and mow the lawn and anything else I could think of. I know they can be a P.I.T.A, but it sounds like they are trying to help, and no matter which of the two vehicles you end up with, you will probably need more help from them!

oh no, don't get me wrong, i appreciate everythign they've done for me, and am especially thankful, I just though it would be fun to show up with mud streaks down the sides of the exploder :p

Not to hijack, but I just made a deal with a guy here that has a ?'72 J-20 with a 401 in it. He wants me to pull the 401 so he can put it into his Rambler.:eek::eek: I'm trying to talk him into taking one of my running 360s for the whole truck. Pray to the Jeep gods for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And yes, this will be my 10th FSJ in the yard. I love having my own parts house.....
