While visiting my brother in Colorado, I came across a 1978 Cherokee with a 360, T-18 and dana 20. It runs, and was only $500. I couldn't resist.... I'd really like to pull the transmission and transfer case out and put them into my '86 GW (I like manual trannies, and I'll get a better low range and a cast iron t.c.). Has anyone ever done this? It seems like everything should fit. What problems should I anticipate? Thanks!

I have never done it but it sounds like it would work. The hardest part will be adapting the clutch pedal from what I can tell.

What's up with the t-case? I am waiting so patiently for it. I sent you an email but no answer. Do you still have it. Email me PLEASE!

I did it in one of my Grand Wags and didn't have any problems, and am in the process of doing it(among other things) with another one now. I used a T-18 and clutch setup from a early '80s J series for one and didn't have any problems. The one I am doing now is with a early T-18 and don't have any problems fitting the whole setup. The first one was really straight forward and should be very easy to do as long as nothing is missing.

let us not forget the most important part of this swap: the 86 has a NP xfer with a driver side diff. you will need to swap at least the front axle, and match the gears, since the d20 needs a passenger side front diff.

im in the process of putting a t18 in my 85 GW. i allready have a passenger side diff, since im currently running a d300 xfer.

the pedal assembly is not a big deal. you do need to remove the steering column to swap the whole pedal assembly, but i had mine done in a couple hours.actually, most of the time i spent on mine was removing what was left of my burnt factory wiring harness from the dash. alot of people that do this sort of swap will want to swap the column anyway so that the auto shifter isnt still sticking out.

the 80 and up pedal assembly is different from the earlier.mine is from a 77,and i had to cut a bracket that was in the way,but other than that,it swapped just fine. the earlier is a big heavy bracket that goes from the firewall t the dash, instead of the little rods that bolt from the pedal assembly to the firewall and dash. IMO,the earlier one seems quite a bit sturdier and is prolly a better way to go.

my swap is further complicated by using a v8 tranny with a 6 cyl, having a 3" body lift, and the fact that im using a spicer 18 instead of a 20.

if you have a donor rig to take all parts from,it will be somewhat time consuming, but fairly easy and staightforward, and well worth it.

the hardest part,i think,is lifting that sucker up in there http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

good luck

I put a T-18A/Dana20 in my 78 cherokee instead of my TH400/QT, and it was a lot of work, but easy. Having the whole truck will make things easier. The clutch pedal will bolt right in, and the hole for the clutch linkage is already there, and so are the holes in the frame for the clutch linkage support. I'm talking about a 78 Chero. I wouldn't think a later GW would be too different.
Good luck!
