my trans is leaking aroung the shift rod where the linkage attaches.do i have to drop the pan to fix?
chevy t 400

No, but there is a special tool to remove and install the seal. A local tranny shop shouldn't charge too much to do it.

I suggest the "local tranny shop" route. They remove the pan, change the filter, etc.

I had a leaking shifter seal as well, let it go too long, lost to much fluid and partially toasted my 727! It is 'OK', but I really wish I had taken it in sooner.

I believe that there are several good detailed write ups on this procedure here, but I went the shop route so I could get everything lined up.

go to a napa or anybody that sells K-D tools and get tool number 2393 gm shifter seal tool runs about $8.00 and you dont have to drop the pan takes about 10 min th change just make sure you have a new seal when you remove the bad one.......
