I'm all for the stock-grind cam. It does what it was intended to do: give good all-around performance, especially at the low end.
yeah if you have a stock, smogged engine its great. he said ADD performance not remain at the same level of "performance" (or lack of performance in my opinion). I'd sugest one that takes lowend and midrange power into consideration
I'm talking idle to 4500 rpm here. however, with any change, in order to get the full effect youmust also make other mods to the engine. I would suggest (if legal in your area) a 4 barrel and duel plane intake manifold, and since you'll be pulling the timing set anyway, put a Cloyes True Roller timing set on. BTW-all of edelbrock's performer series, (intake manifold, carburater, cam&lifters) are designed to work together. the options as far as cams go are a few grinds from crane cams, comp cams and crower cams that I would stick with, I don't like the RV cam option on a jeep that is driven at highway speeds, they tend to fall on their face in my experience. But that is my opinion. SO, The best thing would actually be: get an idea what EXACTLY performance wise you want and then research what the manufacturers reccomend for the set up you want. you can call Performance Automotive Warehouse and some of the other places and ask the tech people what they see the most of, next ask a few machinists in your area what they seem to think is best, remeber, a long duration "lumpy" cam may sound cool but with power coming in at 2500 to 3000 rpm, its pretty useless in a rig weighing 5000 pounds! hope this helps.

I once used a Lunati RV262. 262 duration, 419 lift. Good low end torque. The Edelbrock Performer plus cam is similar duration plus a little more lift, a local Jeeper pal runs it and is happy. He also has the Performer intake (barely better than stock) and a Holley Truck Avenger carb. Loves the carb.
summit 8600.i am happy with the motor so far. but i think i will be even happier when i get the rebuilt 2150 on tomorrow.

I have several friends with AMC 401s in Jeeps
(The little dainty CJ type) that are running
the Sig Erson TQ20 cam with great results.
All of the engines are stock compression, idle
smooth at 700 rpm or so and pull well from
idle to highway cruise at around 3000 rpm. In
low range in Moab, the engines worked great
lugging around on the rocks at 1000-1500 rpm.
I believe I will use on of these in my 360 when
I get around to a complete rebuild. A great all
around cam that outperforms the stock cam without
problems. Summit has them for around $120.

I have the Summit 8600 also. I'll let you know how I like it if I ever get the engine back in the truck!

I can't find specs for Erson cams.... anybody find a spec sheet for Erson cam on the AMC's?
Thanks... continuing to search the World Wide WAIT!!! ;)

Well, my internally stock, externally smogged engine also has an Edelbrock 3731 manifold w/EGR, Carter AFB-9635 carb, Edelbrock TSL-6881 headers w/Jet-Hot ceramic coating, and an MSD-6 ignition.
And a stock grind cam. Because it's the best for "all around" performance. What, you think Jeep/AMC couldn't put a different cam in there for all the uses they anticipated their vehicles to endure?
With these, I managed to tow the River Beast up a pretty steep gravel road. And I managed to get over 14 mpg on a 3900-mile trip to Colorado, Texas, and back.
I had to replace the cam bearings, during which process I could've put any cam I wanted in this block. Don't get too caught up on the print in a Summit or Jegs catalog.

Oh...
Added performance in which area? Low end or high end?
I have the WRONG cam in my FSJ... misled into it...it pulls GREAT on top...but low end suffers....headers and duals don't help low end either...
I did some talking with tech reps at Jeg's (most helpful) and others... short duration cams are what is needed for low end torque with either manifolds or small tube headers no larger than 1.5" and about 2" duals or 2.5" single exhaust... I am doing all the research now before I start the build on my spare 360 to get it right for it's intended purpose...

I've used the Summit cam (SUM-K8600), with good results, and plan on using another in my 79 GE this winter.
Good "seat of the pants" feel to it, plenty of low end, and good value for the money spent. You'll get the correct lifters with the cam. PAW also sells this cam under the actual manufacturer's name of Super Stock Industries.

Just a note... NONE of the Forum members had ANYTHING to do with misleading me into the cam I have.... he was a local guy that I THOUGHT he knew what he was talking about and I believed him...

Yes I too have the Summit 8600 cam with great results. Plenty of low end torq. If I keep the 360 and rebuild another I am going to get the same cam. But I plan on going with a 455 or 500.
