Strengthwise approximately equivalent to Dana 44 up front, with less turning radius, front drum brakes and 5.89 gears.

If you're wanting to go to one tons then hold out for '78-'79 Ford Dana 60 or Chevy Dana 60. Dodges are ok but they have parts that are a little less desirable so I would just hold out until you find one of the first two that I listed.

Now Ford will be a high pinion driver drop and Chevy/Dodge will be a low pinion passenger drop. All three are king pin which is much stronger than a balljoint type.

Also don't bother with newer model Dodge and Ford axles either because they are balljoint style and not as strong and have very little aftermarket support.

jepj2000, could you explain a little more about what the "less desirable" parts on the Dodge 60 are. I'm not extrememly familiar with the Dodge 60, but I was under the impression that it was basically the same as the Chevy 60 except for the brakes.

As far as I know I think up to 1989 the Dodge had external style hubs where as the Chevy had internal style hubs which are stonger and wear better. Dodge did change to internal in the early '90s though.

If you would like to read all about them there is a tech article on pirate4x4.com that will tell you everything you will need to know.
