it seems like i only have 2 gears. i can get to 70m.p.h. no problem would that be posible in 2nd gear? or is it that with all that tourqe 1st gear is bypassed & it pulls off in 2nd.any ideas (this is one hellava good

It'll get to 70Mph, but at what RPM? That's my only question, because if it's at 70 MPH at relatively low RPMs, it's probably in more than second. If the motor is winding out, then you may have a tranny problem.

I had a problem with similar symptoms. It would slip right into third gear at about 15 mph, bypassing 2nd. Didn't bog down at all, almost unnoticeable. Just felt a teeny slip when it changed gears that didn't seem right.

The culprit was the throttle linkage needed adjusting.

Hope it's that simple for you!

I am guessing you have a TH400 for a tranny in your rig. I would first check the linkage comming out the bottom of your steeering collumn. And see if it is bound up at all on its way to the tranny. Have somebody get inside and shift it while you look at it. (engine off or course) If you see the linkage on the side of the tranny move when the person puts it into 3rd, then check the kick down linkage comming from the carb. make sure it is properly adjusted.

with a t400 it is possible not to notice the 1-2 shift under light throttle. There are a few options here, First make sure the kick down lead is hooked to the left side of the tranny, then with the key on, but motor off push the pedal to the floor, you should here a click as the kick down solinoid is activated. Test drive the rig under hard acceleration and count the shifts. there should be 2, if so the tranny is working fine. If you want later shifts adj the nut on the top of the vac modulator (round canister on the right of the tranny with a vac line going to it) this will adj the shift points. If you want firmer shifts you can install a shift kit or a transpak which includes a shift kit. A shift kit can be installed with the tranny still in the rig.
good luck!

Welcome to the forum Toesup. I don't have anything helpful to add that hasn't already been hypothesized. Just wondering how you got a Jeep over there. I think that they should have a larger market there seeing as how many of the roads haven't been repaired since the fall of the Roman Empire. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
