Welcome to the world of the Fullsize Jeep.

I'm pretty sure they're all like that, in addition to California's crappy gas pumps that make the problem worse.

Try turning the handle 90 degrees or others have to turn the handle upside down to make it work right. If you have those vapor recovery nozzles like some stations here in IN, they seem to take forever with our old beasts. Do a search for others that have had the same slow fueling predicament; there is a fix for it.

Most Wags and Chero's are slow to fill. The later era are better though. My 63 is a bear to fill.
If you're dealing with those goofy pumps that have a bunch of holes drilled in the last inch or so of the nozzle it's real PITA. If those are the pumps you have to use in the PRC then get a piece of fuel hose about 6" long to fit over the holes in the nozzle. A hassle yes but a lot quicker fill time.

His location reads San Diego, which I'm assuming means California. In California......every pump is one of those silly vapor recovery ones. I was reeeeeeeeally happy to get out of Cali with my J10 just because of those silly things.

The best method I've found is to insert the nozzle, then turn it 90* to the right. Typically on non-VR pumps I can pump full speed, although it does like to spit some gas at me once its full.

Try filling with the bigger diesel nozzles. I took out the unleaded-nozzle restrictor, but the inside of the filler reduces to a diameter that is smaller than the diesel pump nozzles. THAT is a major pita.

A 74 won't have an unleaded restrictor plate in it. It's basically the bend of the fill pipe that's the prob but worked ok in it's day till they come up with these 'save the freekin planet' nozzles.

Welcome to the world of the Fullsize Jeep.

glad to hear im not alone - the cherokee filled up pretty good, the wag tho is the complete opposite - takes me about 1/2 an hour to fill with all of the stopping & starting :(

Yikes  Try the hose trick 18chero...or find a petrol station that has attendants and a bar/restaurant on site.

You know it's really weird. I have this exact same problem with my 91 yj, I have to constantly change position of the nozzle to get it to fill without cutting off every second. Sometimes I even have to turn it sideways or upside down. The honcho on the other hand doesn't seem to be to hard to get filled, but neither jeep takes all that long. It seems like ya gotta trick the pump into doing what you want it to do. Kinda like my computer sometimes... :rolleyes2:

I alwaysed used the same gas station around home, found one with a slant to the parking pad which helped with the front end lower. A good alternative is to install an aux tank as they fill quicker and then just flood foward into the main tank depending on the set up.
