I have an 86 j truck and 90 gwag -
You are correct in the starter/solenoid being different.
The battery tray is smaller on the 90 - tougher to put a larger battery in.
I had a York compressor in the truck and Sanden in the GW which made for a different ac bracket.
Of course the HVAC system is different. While both are hang on units the GW unit uses the dashboard controls for the AC with a poteniameter built into the temperature slide. Essentially it controls when the compressor goes on/off.
The overall quality of assembly was a little better on the body on the GW.

The 89 has some changes in the wiring harness to accomodate the tailgate wiper also. In 88, they also changed the wiring plugs for the ignition module. Although the module appears to be the same part, the plugs are different.

Isn't the flexplate different for the Mitsubishi starter?
