I have to replace my sending unit, is there any way to do this without dropping the gas tank on a '79 cherokee? It is tight as a tick under there. I pulled up some floor board in front of the back seat and could just barely get my fingers on the connection to pull it off, ground it, and check to see that there is not a short from there to the guage. The guage responded well so I guess the sender has crapped out from sitting for years. Any help would be great.
Thanks,
J

I am not sure what year it started but in the eighties if you lift up the back seat you will find a round plate pop rivited right over the sending unit. Drill the rivets and your in business. Screw it back down when your done.

I did notice a round circle on the floor that is pressed in like a plug (no rivets or screws). I thought "oh joy" but after popping it out, noticed that it was just behing a frame bracket and right infront of that bracket is the sender unit. So I have no idea what that hole is for besides a drain of some sorts.
My 76 didn't have the nice access panel under the back seat. I was thinking about making one. Shouldn't be too hard. Be alot easier than droping the tank in my opinion.

I had to drop the tank to access the sender on our 79 cherokee. Sad part was, the sender was bad and we didn't have a replacement on hand so I have to drop it again... :(
We did find a new replacement unit and one of these days I guess I'll have to do it again. If you wondering why I dropped the tank without a replacement on hand, well, we had a rotted fuel line that had to be replaced due to a severe leak. Oh well....
Anyway, if you drain the tank completely you'll find that its not to hard to remove by yourself. I had to have Susan help me put it back into place however, just to darn unwieldy otherwise.

I tried the Amphicar link you have listed and it doesn't work. Can you send me one that does, those are cool cars.
