how does one go about replacing the FSU? I may be getting one to put in mine and I need to know about how long it should take.
Also does the 86 Waggie come standard with a plastic tank or is this a replacement?

I think the poly tank is stock. I know that right under your back drivers seat, under the carpet (if there is any) and under cardboard there is a easy way to access the fsu. Dont know how hard it is to change cause i am just getting ready to do mine. Someone mentioned that you should change a seal while your doing it but you might want to ask around here.

Try doing a search there is probably some info there.
poly tank....
lift up your back seat and pull up the carpet underneath where the seat was.
there is an access plate (round, riveted).
Drill the rivets.
Pull the cover off.
you'll see the FSU right there.
undo the hoses (2 of em)
undo the wires (2 of em)
unscrew the mount,
pull the sender off...
It's pretty easy. I never saw a seal, must explain the gassy smell in the cab!

If you haven't already found your answer in the archives here ya go:
DISCONNECT THE BATTERY !
Lift the back seat and corner of deck carpet.
Notice a round access panel.
Unscrew the 4 screws or drill out the rivets.
Notice the top of the sending unit with 2 hose and 2 wire connections.
Disconnect the center guage power wire (use a pair of needle nose and lift up gently).
Disconnect the other wire(spade connector) on the outside (ground).
Mark the 2 hoses so you don't get them mixed up. One is the outlet and the other is the return.
Disconnect the hoses.
Get a large pair of Channel Lock plumbers pliers to loosen the plastic NUT holding the sending unit to the tank. A wooden stick and a hammer will work in a pinch by tapping on every other wing of the nut ...but be gentle.
Remove the nut.
Lift the sending unit up and twist it slightly when lifting. The float will give you a little trouble so you have to rotate and twist to get it out of the hole.
Remove a round gasket between the sending unit and the tank.
Once out you will have to remove the SOCK off of the pick-up tube (provided you did not buy a new one) and transfer it to the new unit.
Reverse to install.
Notes:
It is a good idea to use new clamps for the hoses.
Put a dab of dieletric on the connections.
Use some silicone when re-installing the access cover.

Where can ya get a new sending unit for a 79 Chero? And will it have the access panel too?

My 82 Cherokee has an access panel....Been in there at least 3 times
Two additions to Woodybeone's instructions.
1. If drilling out the rivets, watch out to not drill through a hose or the tank underneath.
2. Backflush or air hose the "sock" from the inside to remove collected trash before putting on the new unit's pick up tube.

My '83's got an access plate and it's screwed not rivited. I know Panther's '80 doesn't have one. So not sure the change year. It'll be under the rear seat driver's side if you got one.
