View Full Version : trails I'd like to do this year

I'd like to do Minnie and Maggie, (might do on Tuesday as fambly wants to check out Silverton),
make it to the Buffalo Boy and maybe a re-do of Stony,
take the road from Hurricane/American (don't remember which pass but there's only the one road) that goes towards Silverton instead of Corkscrew,
hit Govenor's again and hike to the top mine, maybe Yankee afterwards,
Also like to do Imogene to check out the mines along the way, but maybe not over if Jenni doesn't want to,
rest is open.

sounds nice! That top mine being the one we drove past in the back scree field of Governers? I'd like to hit that maybe the 2nd day and do an overnight at that clearing we saw before looping down to the entrance of governers. Any idea who's in charge of that area? BLM land maybe?

The mine in the basin that we stopped below where that stream was coming down from. We passed just under it when you enter the basin. Virginius I believe is what it is called. Also the one on top in the center of the basin.
That scree field was cool, but I wouldn't want to hike to that mine through it. I believe that area is called Sydney basin??
As far as I can tell it's on forest land, unless it's patented. But I saw no signs that it was. The only topo's I've seen of that area were from 1955.
That would be a cool spot to camp.

I would like to do Imogene and Black Bear (I think, it still seems a little scary though) and Poughkeepsie, Governor's and Yankee Boy would be good too. Bryan is supposed to contact someone from Creeper Jeepers to see if anyone wants to come out and run Black Bear with us. They nominated Black Bear for the BF Goodrich outstanding trails program and were selected last year... long story but our club is doing the same thing this year in Missouri, so we'd like to see what Creeper Jeepers did, etc. Also, Poughkeepsie was selected as an Outstanding Trail this year, not sure which club is associated with that nomination though. Anybody have a day in mind for the Imogene/ Black Bear trip? I think Wednesday might be good, right at the beginning before everyone is really tired. I guess Flint is talking about doing Ophir Tuesday on the way in, and we will probably be tagging along. I think it was Flint who also mentioned doing Engineers and Cinnamon Pass in a loop? I guess we should try to get up and out a little earlier this year....
Here's what I think I want to do:
Tuesday- Ophir, possibly something else depending on time
Wednesday- Imogene/Black Bear
Thursday and Friday- Some combination of Poughkeepsie, Cinnamon and Engineers, Yankee Boy and Governors

Oh okay, yeah I was thinking about the one in Sydney. That muddy baby jeep trail going up to it looks interesting..hopefully its still there. Not sure when I'm going up, prolly meet up at Flint and Kristas the day before leaving for Hooray and checking out the local runs near them, and follow everyone to the KOA. depends on gas $$ of course.
And yeah, I'm just gana camp there, and if a ranger shows up mad, I guess leave :) But I'd like to check with the ranger station in town and get a permit or whatever if applicable.
I know this year since I'm driving m'self, I'd like to take alot more time to stop and poke around. Third year, seen a buncha trails already, time to get pokey. :)
Beth: Yzergod (username) here on the board is the Prez of Creepers Jeepers, you can just send him a PM. They are going to be up on BlackBear during the weekend I think doing trail maint.
oh, and I want to conquer Corkscrew lockerless to see if I can do it, at some point.

just a reminder, if going UP Poughkeepsie, at least 1 vehicle should have a
locked diff and be the first jeep over the rock section to tug the non-locked jeeps over if necessary. Last year was the first time I did not make it over it without help.
Coming down from the intersection of Hurricane/California trails above Lake Como to the rock can be done without a locker easy enuf but the dirt section that avoids the rock is getting torn up more each yr.

Wanna take time to look around a little more this year myself. Bypassed a lot of cool looking places the last two years. I'm in like Flint. Errrr, not Flint - but Flint, errrrr, just colour me cool man.
I've also done all the trails the last two year open, including that icky trail in Sydney basin. Although I haven't gone over the rock at Poughkeepsie...yet.

two sections of the rock (in lousy pix below w/kids bronco) right side there are a couple rocks which can hang you up if not lifted and a bit steep for a short bit, believe that is where Jamie broke his spring.
Center section (where bronco is) is torn up more where rocks come together and is somewhat washed out at the bottom of the rock so trying to climb up the rock on the left side your tires go into the washout, bumper hits dirt/rocks and you loose momentum and traction, so locker there is almost needed. Have climbed both in the crack (where I scratched Draco last yr) and just to the left up the rock before with no problems all the yrs we've gone there before, heck even did it with our 86 Bronco II yrs ago, but alas its been torn up more each yr. Even did the section to the right before w/o locker but time has taken its toll on it too.
the dirt section to the left of the rock is not easy to get up, even way back when it first was created, it now it almost 2-4 ft. deeper than this old photo. Coming down is fun and still a challenge as it rocks you side to side, have to avoid a big rock or two and hard braking will make you slide.
other than that its easy!

Kenny and I did black bear last year. It is a great trail with great views and some great spots to stop. (Did I mention it is great). It is not technically challenging and the only 'tricky' part is the switchbacks. There you just have to be careful and try to do you multi point turns without hangin your butt end over the side.
I would suggest a less intense trail on Wednesday, kind of a shake out trial run. With 20+ FSJ joining there are bound to be some problems that may crop up with some trucks. Black Bear is not a good place to find out your brakes are giving you troubles or that your carb stalls going downhill at higher altitiudes. :)
Ralph Rogers

20+ FSJ's on a single run would be a disaster, ecologically that is.
I think we should break it up to smaller groups and do different runs on different days.

For those who would like to ride something low on the challenge list the first day (Wednesday), may we recommend Minnie and Maggie Gulch. If you have vapor lock potential, it will show up there and the trail is pretty much 2 track all the way up. The alpine meadows up there are pretty sweet too.
on another note: We have had more precipitation this Spring than since I have been here 6 years, Krista 8. Good chance we will have abundant flower bloomage.

It would be nice for us out-of-staters if maybe a few of the Colorado folk could put a rough schedule together.
Such as:
Tuesday: Trail: xyz
Leaving at approximate time: 0600
Meeting at: Flint's Site
Trail: abc
Leaving at approximate time: 0700
Meeting at site: 46A or someplace in town.
and so on for the rest of the week, then trail planning would be a little more organized and folks could plan on which trails they would like to do. I missed Yankee Boy last year, don't know where I was, but I missed it.
Just a suggestion.
Thanks for all the planning that already goes into this.

Then depending on who tags along, go down towards Crede and come back on the lost trail or take the highway loop back to Montrose. Uh-oh, now my brain is starting to go into overfunctioning mode. Happens a lot before big events. I'll try to keep this short, right now my dilemma is planning related as far as groups and trails to run, etc. Seems like planning too much is never a popular thing, and usually a big pain in the butt, but it seems like the group this year is going to be large enough that some sort of planning may be in order? Who wants to do what, when, and how many rigs is a reasonable number for a group? That sort of thing. Last year it was hard enough to decide what time we were leaving camp! I'm just as guilty as the next person there! But I'll leave it alone. Maybe we can just have campfire discussions about the next day's groups and trails... if we will be able to remember it the next day that is!:alc: Hey, we're going to need lots of wood, and some sort of rectangle fire, or double row of chairs, or something this year with all these people! At least we can make the argument that it doesn't matter how loud we are, since we're pretty much taking up the entire back end of the campground :D.

Although it will mean missing one night of KOA shennanigans, I want to do Yankee Boy AND Governers, and end in Governers, and camp out that night there. Anyones welcome to join, but I dunno if it's 'allowed' (and don't care really). There's a secluded campsite that would be good for maybe up to 3 rigs. There's an 'entrance' to it right before entering Governers at the top, but its narrow, we came round the backway, which is a nice way to end Governers anyways. Shoot, may just spend the day there in the back basin with the dog.

I thought about camping away from KOA, overall seems like more hassle though. I really like the idea, if it were anything other than the Invasion I would never stay at KOA or any other campground of that nature. Normally I'm all about getting as far away from civilization (and RVs!) as possible. In this case I think we're grounded at KOA for the evenings and nights. Kind of fun to be with the group, and easier to sleep in a bit before the morning departures. Just Bryan and me though, I'd vote for backcountry any day (or night). We are staying in a slightly more remote area in Glacier. Grizzly bears have me a little worried, gonna keep a fire, not cook anything, and try to smell like nothing. And make noise ;). Besides, if we have trouble there's always a big box or 2 of shirts to hide under!

Just FYI: I just called the Ouray BLM and asked if camping was allowed up there, they said YES, and NO PERMIT required. So..groovy. :)
and found this listing of trails, may be worth a printout and toss in your glovebox:
Near Durango
Kennebec Pass
Take 160W, 11 miles to Hesperus. Turn right onto La Plata Canyon Road. It's 16 miles from there to the top of the pass; the last 5 miles require 4-wheel drive. It's a moderately difficult route beginning at 8,600ft, and terminates at 11,880 ft. This drive offers scenic views of the La Plata Mountains and various waterfalls. You'll also see remnants of old mining towns along the way.
Bolam Pass/Hermosa Park Road
Travel north out of Durango on Highway 550 for about 28 miles. Your turn is just after Durango Mountain Resort. Turn left at the Forest Service sign labeled "Hermosa Park Rd." This road takes you behind the ski resort and onto Sig Creek Campground. Continue west on this road, which follows Hermosa Creek and eventually ends near the town of Rico.
Lime Creek Road
Travel north out of Durango on Highway 550 for about 27 miles. Lime Creek Road will be on your right after you pass Cascade Village. This route offers great views of Lime Creek and the surrounding San Juan Mountains.
Miller Mountain
Take Florida Rd. (County Rd. 240) northeast out of Durango for approximately 16 miles to Lemon Reservoir. You can access Miller Mountain by continuing north on the dirt road above the reservoir.
Near Silverton
Ophir Pass
Take 550N out of Silverton for 4.5 miles. Turn left onto Ophir Pass Road (FS679). This is the easiest pass connecting Silverton and Telluride. This route was a toll road built by Otto Mears in 1881. It offers great views of Mt. Wilson, Wilson Peak, El Diente Peak and Ophir Valley.
(Difficulty: Easy-Medium)
Stony Pass
Travel northeast out of Silverton on Colorado 110 to Howardsville. Turn right at Howardsville and up Cunningham Gulch. Drive about 2 miles and look for Stony Pass Rd. on the left. The summit of the pass is in another 3 miles. This road was built as a supply route between Silverton and the San Luis Valley. The route passes the headwaters of the Rio Grande, crosses the Continental Divide, and offers spectacular views of the San Juan Mountains. (Difficulty: Easy-Hard)
Cunningham Gulch
Travel northeast out of Silverton on Colorado 110 for about 10 miles. This road offers access to Cunningham Gulch, Minnie Gulch, Maggie Gulch; the sites of old mining operations.
(Difficulty: Easy)
The Alpine Loop Backcountry Byway
(Engineer & Cinnamon Passes)
From Silverton, head east on Colorado 110 for 12.4 miles to Animas Forks ghost town. From here you can take either Engineer or Cinnamon Pass. The loop connects Silverton with Ouray and Lake City. This route offers many historic sites including Animas Forks, Mineral Point, Rose's Cabin and Sherman.
Distance from Silverton to Lake City via Cinnamon Pass: 44 miles
Distance from Silverton to Lake City via Engineer Pass: 37 miles
(Difficulty: Easy-Medium)
Near Ouray
Imogene Pass
Turn onto Camp Bird Rd. (County Rd. 361) just south of Ouray. You will pass the Camp Bird Mine on the left. The road forks in less then 2 miles. Turn left for Imogene Pass. This route connects Ouray and Telluride. It passes historic sites such as the abandoned Tomboy Mine and Fort Peabody, a former guard station during the labor-management conflicts at the turn of the century.
(Difficulty: Easy-Medium)
Yankee Boy Basin/Governor Basin
Turn onto Camp Bird Rd. (County Rd. 361), just south of Ouray. You will pass the Camp Bird Mine on the left. The road forks in less then 2 miles. Stay to the right and proceed past Sneffels, an old town site. Another fork will appear. Go left here for Governor Basin. Stay on the main road for Yankee Boy Basin.
Black Bear Pass
NOTE: This pass is extremely difficult; it is only recommended for very experienced four-wheelers. Take 550N out of Silverton. At the summit of Red Mountain Pass (just south of Ouray), turn left (west) onto Black Bear Road. This is a one-way route that ends near Bridal Veil Falls in Telluride.

We'll be rolling with some FJs while we are there too: The First Annual 2007 FJ Cruiser Summit will be held July 12th-15th and will mark the first national event for all FJ Cruiser owners. The Summit will include three skill level trail runs every day, from near-beginner to advanced. Expect FJ Cruiser Forum (http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/) vendor booths and participation, special guests, a raffle or two, and plenty of good times had by all. All are welcome - families, singles - there is no exclusion for this event.

Hmm this can be good or bad. Is it going to be ridiculously crowded out there making us go to trail we may not of wanted to before. Or not be able to sit around at some spots because of it being full. What do you think? Its not gonna make a diff. I am still comin, but just so I am prepared to do far away trails or something.

Every year we deal with traffic. It depends on how big the FJ Summit is. In 2003, we were over run by GOX (gathering of Xterras) at KOA but did not see that much of them on the trails.
Edit: Since we started running the trails on Wed, Thu & Fri beginning in 05, we have seen less traffic on the trails since our FSJ Invasion doesn't run over the weekend. We do leave Saturday open for trail rides too in case anyone missed that point. It is just not part of the 3 days we plan for. It is a nice drive with great vistas and you usually see herds of sheep up there too.

HA HA HA, that there is funny Phil! Not very recent tho... But a shovel could still come in handy. Someone in our crew left one at Poughkeepsie in 05. Why?
BECAUSE FSJs were used to open that trail and someone left it behind! Now who was that...
So, there is info on the net about Jeep trails. I was told last week the only trail accessable from Ouray that was still closed at that time was Imogene. With the weather we have had the past week, it could be open.
This will give you general trail info:
http://www.narrowgauge.org/4x4/html/4X4.html
This page keeps going up and down, so good luck with the link:
http://www.ouraycolorado.com/Jeep+Road+Conditions
It shows Imogene as the only closed trail too...

as of now they do not have a trail listing...
they have been told some rules they must follow (yeah right as if thats going to happen):
"As a condition of our permits and for safety reasons we will be limited to 8 vehicles per group per the National Forest Service and BLM. This is a safety precaution to facilitate backing to turnouts for on coming traffic. The good news is we are permitted to do staggered starts with interval between. This is an important rule which comes down from their vast experience with event in this area. NFS are thrilled we are coming and quite supportive of our efforts.
The NSF has also restricted a couple of areas for guided trail rides, but have also indicated these are still open to the public and small groups can still travel them. The only reason for any restrictions is safety."
I had warned them of the rock obstacle on Poughkeepsie and the fear factor of dropping off BlackBear.

I saw a bunch of lifted and locked girls in Sacramento last week!
A friend of mine took a stock F150 up the Telluride side of Imogene and said he got to the mine before there was a "trail closed" sign. He then drove back to To-hell-u-ride and took the highway to Ouray and tried it from the Ouray side. He tracked both sides with GPS and said there was only 4 miles of difference between the ends of both the trails. That was two weeks ago.
He also said that Black bear was closed because it was pretty soggy. Of course he was also told that Imogene was open... so who knows.

Well, are on the edge of the desert with humidity hovering below 10% during the day. The AC comes on at sunset and goes off 2 hours after sunrise. ;) The gnats have been bad from here down to 5200 feet in the canyons and that may turn into a bigger issue than the heat if they don't move on soon. They usually do by July. June is gnat month here. We are not up in the ponderosa's like the other place. It is pinion/juniper here and about 600 feet lower elevation. We are about to go to extreme fire conditions in the area. May have restrictions on back country camp fires soon. The grasses this year are over knee deep in some places and will make flash fuel for ground cover start ups.
:p ==> Ouray should be Nice <== :D
Jury is still out on the monsoons, some say 2 weeks some say longer. Last year the monsoon season was wetter than the previous few years. That condition can change fire situations in areas. I ain't no weather man but our house thermometer has been bouncing between about 50 and just over 100 every day for a week. It was 100.9 yesterday, whew...

With almost 400 people there are bound to be a few schmucks in the group. Ignore them. I am sure they run the entire range of enthusists from the guy who plunked $0 down, took a 72 month loan and the only mod was a charger for his cell phone -- all the way to hard core folks who do their own mods and only got 10 miles on the truck before they started pulling stuff off and modifying. (and the schmucks could be in either group). I will hang with the cool folks and ignore the smucks (and then feel bad for the rest of the FJ folks who are stuck with them).
I will run my jeep toe to toe with most any FJ out there. :)
And I repeat. Thank goodness it isn't a Hummer convention

Went back and stayed until 7:30 making a temp fix (like a FSJ?) and will finish with perm fix tomorrow. Hoah boy, tires would not come off the Waggy to beat hell for 2 days of PB blaster and kicking, 2x4 cheater stick (busted), loose lugs and bang it against rocks and stumps in low range. Sheesh... This FSJ needs some attention and it may be a bullet... OH, OH, OH, and the shower head and threaded end of pipe fell off takin a shower this morning before I got rinsed off. Bet yer butt that thing is working and thoroughly tested now. Where was I? Then it was only $10 to pay some young feller at the Conoco to knock them front wheels off with a mallet. The mag chloride had caused electrolosis and glued the alum and steel. I must be getting old cause I could not budge it. Did get the rotors turned, new seals, pads, ujoint press and a set of driveline joints this afternoon. I am going above the treeline Saturday. so be it. in low range. with new brakes. with a 401. I am living the Dream. yup.
