with all this discussion of distributor play I decided to check mine last night......

I had always heard a click/tick coming from it, what I found is the shaft bearing is shot! the shaft has a bunch of side to side play.....so

are there any aftermarket dist that are worth buying?

if not are there any particular years I should get from the boneyard?

come on guys I need some help here.......I have blown off the aftermarket idea(way too much cash for what you get!)...don't want to go to GM-HEI.....

so I am off to the boneyard tomorrow to get a replacement..will any of the electronic ones work? do different years have different advance curves...or should I go to NAPA and get a rebuild?

Hey Bart, remember when I was there and you asked me if that sound was normal? I said mine sounds the same. Well I checked mine and sure emough I think mine are shot too. I need to retire it to the garage for about a month and fix all the "little things"

aaah the fun of chasing the bugs!!!.....I love this part of the project, because with each bug fix it runs better and better...

if there is any side to side play in the shaft it needs to be replaced ASAP.....cuz if there is side to side play at the top of the shaft that means there is side to side play at the bottom where the gear meets the gear!!..

oh and an FYI.......my brother has been working on and playing with jeeps forever and a day...(3 times through the Rubicon so far this year) and he mentioned that on any replacement distributor for the 360 you should replace the roll pin that holds the gear on the bottom of the shaft...he suggests even doubling it up by placing a roll pin within the rollpin.......he said in the last 3 years he has seen 8 roll pins sheer off in replacement distributors! hhhmmmmmm....

Bart and Bryant,

When you go to purchase the new dist.... bring a multimeter with you. I had received the first one with a bad ground.(black wire) It's grounded inside the rubber boot that protects the harness from the housing. Place a lead on the black wire and the other to the dist. housing with the meter on audible. Best way to check it... before you buy it and waste 2 days of chasing ghosts like I did. http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/mad.gif Thought I would let you both know.
