On the Ouray mechanical checklist it mentions x-case chain slip. How do I know if my chain is slipping? I have a clunk that I hear when I shift from park to reverse or drive and sometimes hear it when I let off the gas and then reaccelerate. It sounds like a driveshaft joint, but can't find any play in them. Could this be the chain?
Help! Anyday now I am expecting it not to go when I put it in gear.
I am definetly NOT a mechanic but I know my chain is slipping and its due to get a complete X-case overhaul in the next month or so. Mine goes thump-thump-thump when I floor it from a dead stop. Dont know if just putting it in gear will tell you anything about the X-case.

i am not a mechanic either, but when the ujoint in my driveshaft went out it did the same as you are describing. the seal on the transfer case was leaking and i think that had something with the ujoint going south

When was the last time you changed out the tranny mount? It sounds like it is starting to go on you. Climb under there and pry on it and see if it moves. Mine was doing the same thing and I replaced the tranny mount and it was better.

Mine does the same thing, I have a bad tranny mount hopefully I'll get that changed this weekend and I'll post to let all know if it fixes the issue, I was pretty worried about the xcase chain.
My truck as always done that. Bad tranny mounts/new tranny mounts, different Tcases, all still the same, really no better or worse. I think that is just slack in the drivetrain. I don't worry about it to much because it seems to be kind of a universal thing among FSJ's, and its been doing it for years and years now... <shrug>

okay, you guys are making me a little less worried. It is a pretty solid clunk though, I've been afraid it's going to break something. I'm going to get under there and give everything a more thorough look.
Having just o'hauled my t-case, it is evident that a chain that is "slipping" would cause deafeningly bad noises not to be associated w/ your symptoms. When you do go to do your case, I recommend using 4-sight in NY. If the guy that runs it (Ivan) can run me through the R&R (which he was more than happy to do), then he can do it for you too. He had cheapest prices on all the bearings too.
The u-joints are cheap, so check there first. The trans mount is cheap too, but is no fun changing. Don't forget to check your motor mounts too. Place a jack under the engine then tranny to check for excessive motion at the mounts.
