NP 229 xfer differences? HELP!

Can anyone tell me the difference between a Type 1 NP 229 and the Type 2 NP 229 xfer cases? This is on an 84' GW with a 360 & a Chrysler TF 727 tranny. I know that the front axle is a D44 with Vacuum diaphragm (sp?). Input is greatly appreciated!

I'm going out on a limb here but I think the type I is the one used w/vac front axle and type II the 85's and up.
I don't think internally the 229's are different just the shift mech on the dash and vac routing. The early vac front axle(83/84) you could not shift on-the-fly but the later ones you could. The later ones you didn't need to come to a stop and pull and hold a lock pin while shifting from 2WD to 4WD.
