Hi.
I own a 1982 Cherokee, 360 with the 727 tranny. It starts up fine but as soon as i put it into drive it sputters forward and then stalls. the only way i can get it to move is if i start in drive (I know its havoc on the starter.). origanally i thought it was the tranny was gone, but then i thought "If it was the tranny wouldn't the revs be doing something?" I am completly stumped on what it is.
Anyone have ANY Ideas???

Sounds like a vacuum leak some where on the motor. Could also be timing is way off. If it just started doing it all of the sudden then I would lean toward a vacuum leak. I would start looking there first then check timing. You could have also jump the timing chain but lets check the little easy stuff first.

It didn't start doing it all of a sudden. For about a week it was REALLY lacking power up hills (Infact i couldn't get outta my drive way unless i was in reverse.). Then one morning it started to act up like i described in my firt message. I will try what you suggested anyways though. Thanx for the help.

If it was the tranny you would know for sure. You can't mistake when a tranny is slipping. The motor revs and you just go know where fast. My guess is still a vacuum leak. Does it still run bad after it has warmed up? Might be looking at a carb rebuild too.

It doesn't improve even when it is warm. Hopefully it is a vacum line ($700 for a rebuild). i will check the lines, Timing and try putting on the carb from my brothers Landcruiser. I will let you know if i solve the problem.
