View Full Version : where do these vacumn hoses go?

just replaced my EGR and hooking back up the hoses and I have 2 left. One goes to the EGR, the other I don't know where, and I don't know which one goes to the EGR.
One is coming off the back of the air cleaner and has what appears to be some sort of valve on it, and the other comes out the bottom of the air cleaner twoards the middle.
Also behind the carb there's a part where alot of the vacumn hoses goto, and there's a free port on it, but it's a really large port and the hoses that are left don't seem to fit on it.

I have an 89 and will look once the sun comes up and give you a reply later in the day if that helps. Personally, off the top of my head, I don't know, but if mine is set up correctly, it should be of some help to you. I'll send a reply in a little while.

Long shot, but is your vacuum schematic still there under the hood? There is a decent one in the Haynes manual too.

check out www.customefis.com (http://www.customefis.com)
about the middle of the page there is a link called "Understanding emissions systems and how to reconnect them."
Invaluable.

I agree, the link has the schematic listed. The stock air cleaner has 2 vacuum motors in it. The one closest to the carb closes when the jeep is turned off to prevent gas fumes from leaking. The one out towards the snorkel closes when the jeep is cold, thus pulling air from the inlet facing down (which ought to be connected to the manifold by a pre-heater hose.)
If nothing else, get these connected right, as very poor running can result.
hint... It takes a little while, but the schematic diagram can be understood by a AJO (average Jeep Owner) I say this because the vacuum system is integral to the operation of many FSJ's, and, in my opinion, easy to work with.

The vac hose on top of the egr gets connected to the side of the air cleaner. The other air hose coming from under the air cleaner I believe gets tied into the round grapefruit size vacuum can on the firewall. You should see a Y connector 4 inches off the can. I hope that's right. I know I'm right about the egr. I just did mine.

Here's your vac diagram. Scroll down to the Vacuum Diagrams and print the last one out on the next page. If you've never seen one before, be patient and follow the lines. I re-did all my vac lines and it made a HUGE difference in the way it ran!
Good Luck!

Also, you mentioned a part behind the carb where a lot of lines go but one is free. That may be the "dual CTO valve" mounted just behind the passenger side of the motor (?) It has 6 connections. Only 1 is free and has a small filter in it (really tiny) The other 5 are for vac hoses. Email me if you have any questions.
