I have to switch out a bad 360 in my wag and already have a good running one to replace it with. BUT, the "new" 360 has about 1K on it already so I'm wondering... before I put it in, Maybe I should get it re-built... If I take the engine to the shop, get any replacement parts myself what am I looking at for labor to rebuild and do the mechine work? Also, what should I look at upgrading for a "mild" rebuild. I'd like good power, don't expect much on gas milage as long as I can keep it in the double digits! I want a comfortable street/long trip bad weather, mild wheeling rig. Basically a moderate lift, good suspention but still comfortable ride on those long hauls with an engine that's reliable with good power and able to pull a couple thousand pounds on a trailor... What do you guys think ???

I checked in to a very well reputable place here in KC and they wantd $1200-$1500 with alot of high quality parts. They wanted $3000 total them take out and do everything.

Why would you rebuild an engine that only has 1000 miles on it?? That's not even well broken in yet.

But to answer your question, my rebuild has cost just about exactly $2000. It is pretty thorough, and has included extras like intake manifold, Edelbrock carb, Summit cam, balancing, plus all the standard rebuild stuff like having the heads done with 3-angle grind, bore cylinders, new pistons and bearings, but nothing exotic like port and polish the heads. All disassembly and assembly labor is my own. Price shown was every last nut, bolt, and can of paint.

Good luck, have fun, and inspect your new roller timing cam sprocket very carefully.

I agree with Al. I'd start it on a stand to make sure no water got in it and caused surface rust in the cylenders, change all the fluids and put it in. How long has it sat?

You may want to look at Advance or others. The one thing that is nice about a reman motor is the warrenty. If you rebuild yourself you do not have any. I just a partial rebuild on a friends 360 and he still has $800 in it. This includes cam, lifters, gaskets, waterpump and many other small parts that you end up changing.

Sorry... I meant 100K! not 1000 miles... the engine was bought from a member here on the forum and has been sitting about 2 years I think. It is supposed to run good, not burn oil...basically a good used engine. I'm just thinking, before I put it in, maybe I should re-build it. I already had plans to replace the water pump, head gasket, re-build the carb, timing chain, and a few other odds n ends... BUT, it sounds like a re-build would cost a fortune! I can get a crate engine for less than 2 grand with a warrenty! Soooo...., maybe I should take it to a shop and have it put on a stand and tested... I just don't have the place to do it myself... that might be well worth the effort.

I would never put a 100,000 mile motor in, without going through it, then again I would not buy an engine with that many miles for a swap either. Engine with that many miles is a good rebuild core, not a replacement engine. Cost to rebuild will depend a lot on internal wear, Machine work that would have to be done, and performance upgrades you choose.

well, in defence of my purchase, it was a great deal and having never driven the wag at all, I thought it would be a good cheep way to put an engine in and make sure the trany and all that other stuff works before putting all that $$$ into a crate engine or a re-build. Yea, switching the engine out would not be a tonof fun, BUT I think it beats dropping 2-3 grand on a crate engine or rebuild only to find out the tranny or diff or who knows WHAT is shot...
