I know this has been talked about. What are peoples feelings about oil brand and weight.
I have used Max-life in my old BMW and it worked well. I have been using it in the 88GWAG but not long enought to know its effects. What is everyone using? as well as filters, I have Mobil 1 filter in it but at 10= bucks a wack? Look forward to everyones thoughts. (BTW, I may be able to keep my jeepy)

About the only thing I've heard latley is to stay away from Fram filters. Seems their quality control went out with the dirty oil and they have a problem with the filter collapsing and the filter element is not doing the job it should. Dont quote me on that but thats my story and I'm stickin to it.

You can do a search for past threads, but most people seem to favor the Wix filters from NAPA. IIRC, buy the top-of-the-line because their cheaper version is just a rebadged Fram.
I've never been burned by any filter, but buy Wix because there's a NAPA store close to work.

Wix, Purolator or Delco Filter. Depending on where I shop, right now I am using a Purolator.
Professionally on large marine diesels I use the Wix line for various applications
Mobil 10W 30 winter
Mobil 10W 40 summer
both non-synthetic.
You'll get many opinions as regard to what oil to use, sythetic verses non etc. Seems to me that there are arguments both ways on it, many is the night that i've spent arguing oils over a beer or two.
But yes secound the NO FRAM thing no direct bad experience but I've heard enough stories to leave them alone.

I stick to the Delco filers. They seem to be pretty good quality, and most places carry them.

I only use Valvoline oil products. Currently
using the full synthetic in everything. The
Max Life is likely the best for older engines.
AC delco filters work great and cost less than
the Wix/Napa premium but either are very good.
When I was a kid (long ago) we had a new
Fram filter blow apart on our farm tractor.
The insides of the Fram filter were cheesy.
Never trusted them again. Others report they
are junk as well.

I ONLY use fully synthetic oil everywhere along with the best filters I can find. The study that is linked above is a good reference and confirmed that I was doing allright.
I normally use Mobile 1 with a K&N oil filter. I also use an upper lube in the gas tank also (Marvel's or Pensoil 2 cycle).
I don't think that an oil change every 3 to 5 thousand miles is worth griping over or time to be cheap. Oil is the life-blood of your expensive motor and worth the expense of the added cost to keep it in good condition.
Bottom line: Go with the best you can get on sale and stock up.

I use a Wix filter, but my DD (Thumper) uses so much oil, I usually use straight ol NAPA 30 wt. In my others, I use Castrol synthetic.

I usually go with the Purolator filters and 10W-30 Castrol in the winter and 10W-40 in the summer. Seems to work for me.

I think under normal driving conditions, that about any brand will do. The key is regular (3-4K) intervals on filter changes. I use Fram (for many years) and castrol in a variety of vehicles (4,6,&8 cyl) and never have had any problems associated with oil. If I were to change my driving habits, say like pulling a trailer, or extreme conditions, I would go with a "beefier" filter. But I don't, and I change my oil pretty regular, so I 'll "dance with the one that brung me" until something changes. Different strokes for different folks.

About FRAM filters, I was, again, re-tightening the exhaust manifold bolts last night, and looked over at the FRAM filter, the one with the anti-slip grip at the top, and man, that stuff is slowly buring away from the heat of the engine, and am sure not doing the integrity of filter any good, still has a good seal, but, being right next to the front of the passenger side exhaust mani's, the filter does not seem to be fairing well, I am replaceing it this weekend...

Carquest filters are made by wix and carquest oil is valvoline. The "red" filter is comparable to a delco or a motorcraft, most of them have an anti drain back flap, the "blue" carquest filters are wix. For AMC v8 and 6 the red runs about 3 bucks, the blue closer to 10.

I've heard not to use the Fram filters because of the filter itself. It's supposed to be too thick and resticts oil flow. Sorta like using pleated filters for your central a/c. BTW, pleated filters restrict air flow and makes your unit work harder. Really doesn't filter the air that much more. Buy the cheap blue ones for a buck and change once a month.

im going to be switching to wix filters on my next oil change as I can get them from a local auto parts store for the same price as wal-mart sells fram for

I will go with the wix as well on the next oil change, and still use the max-life. Any thoughts on using straight 40 or 50 weight in the summer?
