View Full Version : Towing a rig off the trail w/a SWB J10?

I am running a trail in a few weeks to remove an abandoned vehicle. This is the first time the honcho would be wheeled although the trail is not hard at all.
We need to pull this off of the trail. I would like to know what the towing capacity of the J10 is. Mine has stock gears and no lockers. Should I even attempt this or just have some of the Tacomas that are going pull it?

I don't think you'll have a problem unless either your clutch is questionable or your auto trans slips btween gears. Weightwise it looks like an even matchup, besides, it's only Made Of Paper And Rust. Even better as it looks like somewhat of a rolling chassis.
I would do it if mine were still stock.

This is what I wanted to hear. My transmission doesn't slip between gears. We are going to put tires on it and weld up the steering which is Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogleyed right now. I am going to get a hitch from PnP this weekend from a Cherokee.

Don't let this old timers last ride out come courtesy of Tyota. Give it the decent treatment it deserves from a fellow brother in DCX. I know it's a stretch cause I'm from the AMC Jeep generation and will always refer to my Jeep as that.
Just keep an eye on your gauges (the ones that work) and keep it slow and steady. Use a strap instead of a chain as it will stretch to help soak up shock loads from pulling.
Good luck, JR

Hahaha..I will try to do it proud. Thanks for the advice. I never use chains, straps all the way!

You should be fine. RE putting wheels on it, make sure they don't roll TOO easily. You don't want it rear ending you on downhill sections. Maybe have a helper on the rear end with a strap to help slow it down.

Are you just towing it to a trailhead to be put on a trailer? you shoudl do alright. It looks like it' s at least a rolling vehicle, no tsure about the tires. You may have to put some effort in extracting it, but a tow stretch strap should do fine. Get pics for all of us.
For some reason, this doesn' t look like it was intentially abandoned. Perhaps a breakdown and vandals hit it before it could be attended to, but who knows? It looked like it was fairly clean before being shot up:confused: .

i think its extractable, might wanna disconnect the driveshafts, cause it doesnt look like its going to be put in gear any time soon. but i think you'll find out that the cherokee hitch will not fit your j10, pickup frames are wider. in any case take pictures.

We are actually going to fabricate a pintle hitch to pull it out. Straps as a secondary. We will have a truck behind it as well. We are going to weld up the steering as well so someone can be in it and steering as it is coming out. Once we get it off the trail, the FS is taking over and will dispose of it legally. It has been on the trail for 2 years now, for a while it was on its lid because some A-HOLES decided to flip it, and the OHV manager of the FS and I have finally been able to get it planned for the first weekend in June (we have been communicating for over a year).

Hmm on the hitch. I looked online and for the Acme hitch it had the same part number for my 75 J10 as 1976-1996 Cherokees.

I'd get the measurements. I'm not sure of the difference between cheros and trucks, but a 76 chero is an entirely different vehicle from a 96 chero:eek:

Yeah, I am going to measure my frame BEFORE going to PnP.

let me be the first to say THANK YOU! for volunteering to clean up that mess. if more people did what you are doing there would be a much better view of the 4-wheeling crowd in many areas. now if we can only get people to not leave their crap in the first place....

Thanks Al. We know all too well in CA that trail preservation is top priority otherwise the world of 4 wheeling will cease to exist. :banghead:

yeah it is a stretch considering that vehicle isn't a DCX product,,
its a bronco2 or a Exploder 2 door in the Eddie Bauer trim... :)
guess you thought it was an xj, not intended as an insult i'm sure...

It looks like a full-size Dodge Ramcharger to me. They had those rear side windows that wrap up into the top, and the front fenders have sharp corners on 'em like a Ramcharger.

Wow...That old Ramcharger has almost as many bullet holes as Bonnie and Clyde's death car.
I want the seats.......Just kidding.
At least someone thought of a good use for a D@dge:D.
May have been an inapropriate location though.:(.

Reebles-
Is your J10 a TH400/QT equipped rig? If so, make sure your e-drive is operating properly before you do any heavy yanking especially in 4 low. You can chew up the clutch cones in short order if you start to slip while pulling. Putting it in e-drive removes the cones from the equation and will give you equal traction front and rear.

Yep, its TH400/QT. I used the e-drive this past weekend when I went to Carnegie and it seems to be working fine. Thanks for the info though :)

Looking at that heap (Ramcharger), I keep thinking a sawzall :sawzall: might be the best way to remove it :D
