I used to own a 79 Jeep Cherokee with Quadratrac. I used to turn that little switch in the glove box and it refused to stay stuck. Ok, I have very little clue as to why that is ... What is Quadratrac? I assume I have a normal peg-leg front and rear full time 4wd system, but what happens when I throw the switch? what gets "engaged" or "locked" up? The differentials?
I am about to buy another 79 Jeep, I have always believed in air lockers, but with Quadratrac, I do not want to get redundant with it.

Quadra-Trac is a third differential. It is in the transfer case BETWEEN the two axles. If you are not in "E-drive", the truck is not in real 4x4 mode, and will allow more of the power to go to the front or rear (resembling a 2wd vehicle) - once you throw it in E-drive, it locks up the center diff, and you have a 4x4 system that is exactly the same as all the other 4x4s. ARBs would be a nice addition to the system and then you would never get stuck.

Mindytrambler,
Check the tech library under drivetrains, Borg Warner Quadratrac. Those are the full time cases with E-drive.

Is this Qudratrac system weak by 4 wheeling standards accross the industry? Are "simple" cases better or stronger? If they are weaker, is it due to its intrinsic design or the fact that is has the "Quradratrac" features?

No - not weak - it will hold up to some good HP - but there are cheapo chains available that will make your life miserable if you try to use one.

The fact that the QT was offered in a line up with a 401 V8 and a TH400 should be some indication of the strength of the case. ;)
