Hey guys. I got a question. My 4wd finally decided to pull the typical vaccuum failure. I would find a replace the lines, but seeing as i have pretty much completely removed the engine vaccuum lines, this would be a real pain.
My question is. Is it possible to change from a vaccuum shift to a manual shift on the 229. I think i read that Dome had done it. If it can be done, let me know and let me know how.
If it cannot be done let me know an easy way to fix the vaccuum lines with out using the stock assembly.
Thanks in Advance

The stock metal line is the easy way to fix the vacuum lines.
I have been told by a trans/rearend friend of mine that you can remove the detent from the transfer case and rig a choke cable or a PTO cable to opperate the mode lever. For the front axle he said to weld the shift fork in posistion to engage the slip collar and put manual locking hubs on it. I still think it would be easier to replace the metal vacuum manifold and put it back stock if your servos are o.k.

We used to do that on QT's - pull out the vacuum actuators and use a control cable instead. Worked great, and you always knew if you were locked or not.

Of course it can be done, after all the vacuum only activates an easily moved shift rod or other similar mechanism.

Thanks for the info. I looked all over the forum and couldn't find anything relating to that. Double thanks.
