Well I drained the Lucas synthetic lube out of my rear axle and will never buy any more of their product. Since their juice has been in my axle (boy, you have to be careful how you word that!) I have heard and felt more chattering than when I bought the truck. When I drained it, it was runny and came out quick. I am the kinda guy that believes if I cannot trust one of your products, I can't trust any of them. So no more. I know a lot of you like them, more power to ya. Hope it works out for you and you have many years of good service as a result. I believe not.

Is it still chattering/grabbing?

I've used Lucas Oil Stabiliser in worn-out engines, but not in the Wag or MB, where I use only a good-quality oil such as Amelie or Shell Rotella.

I vaguely remember there being a thread on this forum about the alleged virtues of this crankcase oil additive, and that someone ran some tests on this product and found that it tended to make the oil foam at high RPMs.

And I always thought it was 90W-140 that one used in a punkin....

I do have limited slip. Supposedly Lucas synthetic meets or exceeds manufacturers recommedations for LSD's. It chattered some with Castrol Syntec in it, but not as much as with the Lucas.

Lindel, I have not driven it enough to get it hot. You know what I'm talking about. I replaced it with some Valvoline synthetic blend and a friction modifier.

Edit: I forgot to mention the oil was dark gray. Not foamy, or milky, and it was cold when I drained it. (78 deg.)

Indeed I do! Scared the S*** out of me the first time it did it, considering the truck had just killed the tranny!

last time I changed the differential oil I went with Mobil 1 synthetic 90-140 and the lsd additive. Very smooth now. I had conventional 140w in before and I could feel the rear end bind up a bit when turning a corner after coming off the highway.

Aw shoot -- I thought this was going to be one of those rants about MG electrics! No experience here with Lucas fluids -- I like Redline synthetics for all gearboxes, including my front & rear limited-slips. Cold-pour viscosity is typically low on modern synthetic lubes, which can be alarming to someone accustomed to good ol' 140-weight, but that's part of what contributes to their efficiency and cold flow protection. Molecular shear strength and resistance to heat breakdown is what matters, and of course the right friction modifier for diff clutches.

so... you did add the L/S friction modifier right? the stuff that you need even w/ syn oil?

No I did not put the additive in with the synthetic because the bottle said it was good enough and Dr. F-ing Z said use synthetic gear lube, or regular gear lube with a modifier for my TJ, so I thought it was good enough for all LSD's.

I have had no complaints with previous use of Lucas lube products for engine, automatics and power steering. I currently run Royal Purple synthetics in my D44s (rear w/Lockright) and NP208. The rest of the fleet is running QTs w/Jeep QT fluid and 80/140 axle lube.

 You and me both! I had an unhealthy relationship with British Leyland cars and Lucas Electrics when I was younger and more resilient... :D

heh, Mike, I worked on a few British bikes at my 1st mechanical type job and I much preferred working on the Hondas of that period. We had a specialist for Hondas and one for the British clan and the Brit mechanic cursed on the job a whole lot more than the other guy...;)

Cant really blame the second fluid for the damage the first one did. Once a clutch pack chatters it usually needs replacement.

You need to add the addative. Even with synthetic.

Well I just towed the camper to Gilmer, Tx. and back, and I never heard a peep out of it, even at low speed with a hot axle, which is when it usually chatters. As I mentioned before, it chattered when I bought it. I'm not sure the PO ever changed it. It was like chocolate mud when it came out.

I am right there with you on the Lucas crap. I used their diesel engine oil. **** engine knocked and rattled (more than a diesel is supposed to!!!) and had so much blow-by that it was pushing oil out of the gasket between the block and timing cover. Things were so bad that I was on the phone with the engine supplier telling them what a piece of crap the engine was. I changed the oil over the weekend and went to good old Rotella T and the difference is amazing. The knocks and rattles have disappeared, and blow-by is nearly non-existent. I will never use any of their lubes again.

While I don't have an opinion on the Lucas stuff, why is everyone running such heavy oil in the diffs? 80W90 is plenty and if you want to go syn, run 75W140. If you have a trac loc, make sure to use friction modifier.
