I currently own a YJ that I thoroughly enjoy, but I have the opportunity to get an old Wagoneer (71 or 72 I believe) for free. I've always been a big fan of SJ's and this would give me a good opportunity to build one. It's currently in pretty good shape except that the tranny is shot. It has a 6-cylinder and it runs great. I think the tranny is a turbo 400, is that correct?? Which 6-cylinder would be in this Jeep? Eventually I would be swapping in a small block V8, is this practical? I know almost nothing about these style Jeeps, so ANY info on axles, engine, tranny, t-case, etc would be most helpful. Thanks,

Brian

This will be a easy.
The tranny is a T400, the 6 is an AMC 258, the T/case a dana 20. To convert to a small block Chevy will just be a matter of finding a short shaft T400 in chevy bolt pattern and bolting the transfer case and adaptor from the AMC tranny to the chevy tranny. You will have to come up with motor mounts and as the motor will have to come forward you will need new drive shafts. Some of these rigs had Buick 350's in them so a that may bean easier way to go if you want a GM motor but still stay with Jeep parts. you might even find a donor at the j/y.
