View Full Version : If the 176 will bolt up to the 360, why not relocate the engine?

Attempting the 258 360 swap and am being told the 176 will need a longer shaft and a 4-5" spacer to keep the shifter and crossmember in place. Im just looking at the 360 and the 258 in both rigs. The 360 sits about 5" further up from the fire wall than the 258. Why not relocate the engine mounts more rearward, fab a bracket that moves the radiator back some and that would take care off the space issue. Essentially leaving the back half of the drive train in place and just working the engine into the position needeed? Dennis

I6 is a lot longer than the 360 and the mounts on the engine are located in a different manor, so I do not think you can make a comparison that way. I now the 360 there is not much room behind the valve covers to firewall, so unless you are planning to cut out the firewall I doubt you can slide the 360 back 5" back. Some have done this but left the 360 sit where it should and moved the trany up to the motor. Then they have had to bend the shifter to clear the dash. Moveing the engine back that far even if it were possibe would open up a whole new can of worms.....Clutch linkages, fan spacers, exaughst, and a half dozen unforseens.

In the SWB Jeeps, we just use the driver's side motor mount and cut a notch into the passenger side mount so it can be slid forwards about an inch or so. If the back of the V-8 is where the back of the I-6 was, why would it hit the firewall and why would the transmission have to be moved?
I'm not real familiar with J-Trucks yet so please tell me what I'm missing here.

The long shaft T176 with spacer bolts right in. Why go through the headache of moving all those components when you could simply buy a transmission, and then sell your short shaft unit to a CJ guy (they seem to lust after them). By the way, it looks like I'll be selling my long shaft T176 (which I got from Panther), since I decided to go the T-18/Dana 20 route instead.

Hey bitter, I have access to a T18-208 combo out of an 83 j20 401, so I should have a direct bolt up also. With linkages and shafts. Now all i need is a 360 flywheel. Dennis

Flywheels are $125 at 1-800-923-jeep. I just had a used one resurfaced and a new ring gear installed for about $60 total. So it seems like a new one isn't a bad buy. And if you don't go for that T18-208 setup, I'd be interested in the details! I'm right on the verge of starting the automatic to T-18 swap on my 81 J10, and would prefer that setup over all others (avoids the axle swap)...but haven't been able to locate the parts at a decent price. By the way, I just sold a short shaft T176 to a CJ guy with a blown T5 for $275. Put it on offroad.com website.

HEy Dennis,
I got your email, sounds like a plan (and sandman's set up in for sale smile.gif ).
Looks like there are 3 different posts regarding this so it's kinda hard to follow.
I have some description and pictures in a previous thread with the T176 to T18/208 swap t18 story (http://www.ifsja.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=005145)
THe set up is pretty long so you'll have to do different length driveshafts.
You should not have the trouble with the gas tank I did because you have a J10.
Lee
Edit: I was wondering if you had installed the T176 yet Eric. Going with the T18/20 instead I see...

hi, how do you know what version of the j trucks used a short shaft and long shaft version of the t-176. I have one out of a CJ which is probally the short and would like to pick up a spare from a j10. Are there specific years? What should I look for to tell. thanks Mike

For a donor, the T-176's were avail from 80 on in J-10's, Cheros and in rare cases in a Wag but those were usually just in corporate/fleet/gov Wags.
