Ok, I have been complaning about my vehicle being a bit unreliable and old and this, that, and the other thing. So my dear darling wonderful wife said, go get a used TRUCK, preferably a crewcab so you can haul the kids around. She told me that I could spend between 5 and 10K. I called my buddy Zack, of ZM JEEPS fame, to ask him his recomendation, Ford, Dodge, Chevy, etc. He warned me about buying somebody elses problem with a used truck with high miles. He suggested to rebuild my 83 J10. I thought it was a good idea, but if I suggested that to my dear darling wonderful wife, she would NEVER go for it. So I dropped the bomb at dinner Monday night and she said OK! I just about choked on my dinner! So here is my plan for my 1983 J10 1/2 ton truck:
360 V8 - w/ Holley 4barrel
NV4500 5 speed
custom rebuilt 208 transfer case
Dana 44 HD front - 4.11's or 4.56's
Dana 60 rear - same as above w/ locker of some type
3/4 ton springs w/ 2" lift
33" tires
paint and body work

get you a salvage J-Truck with a regular bed, take the back half of the cab and make yours a crew cab, then use a regular bed instead of your long bed.....:)

Sounds like you should buy Pete's Truck and put the finishing touches on it and call it good

So where did you hide those axles till you broke the news :D

Your not giving your Jtruck enough credit, it looks better then those pics.

Glad to hear your keeping the truck. I wish my wife was that understanding. All I hear from her is the sell word.

FSJ-Earl, other than being w/ a GW, this is exactly my logic and the way I went, too!

What Zack said plus the fact that a BRANDY NEW isn't all the reliability it's cracked up to be...I've been down that path, too, and it was a bumpy, 14 service calls in 16 months, 1 recall, and $XX,XXX in lost equity road.

If you're not racking up the miles (not my case), the only thing that might make sense is leasing something new so you're dumping it every 18-36 months and getting something new.

My case is rebuilding a decent, locally sourced GW for my needs: some off-road, some equipment hauling, some car hauling, some passenger hauling...and sometimes all four in something that looks nice.

I'm nearly thru rebuilding/replacing the drivetrain and will start hitting the other stuff soon. (Search on this board for "Zarathustra" for progress so far")

What axles? I have no idea what you are talking about! Who are you and why do you keep saying stuff like that? ;)

Actually the truck looks worse than those pics, body wise, it lookes better due to the lift and bigger tires, but it is slowly rusting away around me!:banghead:
