I know where there is a used 401 is it worth my time to get or would I be better off with my 360 or a chev engine ??????:p

If it runs and runs well, (no knocking, doesn't burn (too much) oil, etc), I'd say it's worth anywhere from $200 (I'm cheap) to $750. Of course, make sure YOU hear it run. Even better if it's still in the truck.

I tell you what if you pay to ship it I'll be glad to take it off your hands!

It's worth whatever you are willing to pay for the rare 401.
If your name is Flint, you should be able to find it for a couple of bits.

Pricing really depends on who has it and whether they know what they've got. Ive seen a stock one go for around 500$ complete. Junkyards around here will charge around $150 or $200 for a complete engine, so if you can find a 401 in the junkyard, you can really luck out.

As far as whether they're worth it, depends what you want to do with your engine. A well built up 360 will be far better than an unmodded 401. From a stock standpoint the 401 is obviously going to do better than a 360, plus it has that "aww" factor. However, the 360 is still a great engine.

To me, it's really not worth swapping to a 401 right now because my 360 has about 98k on it and runs great. Even passed emissions this year. Whoohoo!

This isn't to say I wouldn't grab a 401 if I happened upon it in the junkyard though. Of course I would...

It's in a wagoneer in a wrecking yard unable to hear it run

the upside however is that it's complete:thumbsup:

What do they want for it?
Does it turn over?
Check the dipstick and carb/intake for water intrusion.
Pull a valve cover, etc.

Might be worth it, might not be.
I've seen some people pay some stupid-crazy prices on eBay for 401 pieces.

Core charge here where I am in WA is $250 for a rebuildable 401. As J10Mike said it's pretty much how bad do you really want one and what you're willing to pay.

You'll have to check with Flint and Krista. Every 401 I know of, is now on their property.:) ;)

$500.00 seems to be the average.

Start with an offer of $150 if they pull it... ;) Oregon is covered in Jeeps, the yard prolly wouldn't expect more that $300 tops...

The standard we have kind of adopted is $500 max for a FSJ with a 401 if we can hear it run and around half that max for one we can't hear run. That is for the whole FSJ. Have not bought an engine seperate from the FSJ yet and our yard shows it.

Our track record so far...
76 Cherokee 401 - $600 - engine & parts donor - 401 is in my GW
77 Wagoneer 401 - $100 - driver/keeper
76 Wagoneer 401 - Free - driver/keeper
75 Wagoneer 401 - $500 - engine & parts donor - 401 going to Gambler68's J10 project
77 J20 401 - $1500 - driver/keeper

We have also seen some ridiculous prices for 401 engine and 401 parts. It just depends on how bad you want 401 stuff I guess.

What is the difference in timing covers?

None, same AMC p/n as the 360's.

LoL - I bet on Ebay, one off a 401 is worth more than one off a 360. We should do an experiment and see if people are willing to pay more for one off the mysterious and rare 401 :D

I've had 3 401's in my posession... have paid an average of $50 for them.

But that was years ago from the u-pick yard, and the last one was a gift, and the 2nd one was an all you can carry at the u-pick -- two FSJ friends were kind enuf to do the carrying!!!

i want more power out of my wag. so should i gop with modding out the 360 with 200k mi on it or shoudl i try to find a used 401 with less miles? i really want my jeep to get to the point where it only sees the trails. that would prolly help with the advice too

What kind of trails?

Wheeling in the West, from what I have seen, doesn't necessarily require gobs of power... you're already in 4-lo. With that and the torque converter, it's fairly rare to run out of power.

The 401 has substantially more power potential than a 360. If you have to build up a motor, I would do the 401. I had that decision and build a 360 and it never had the kind of power I hoped for (altho I think they goofed up something) I've since swapped in a 360 with 100k and it has pretty ok power (more than the rebuilt motor...go figure!) But have a 401 in the garage to build up over time as I know that, if built right, they can really put out impressive power.

well the majority of the trails here are woods and half the reason i wanted to swap motors is because my 4wd doesn't work and i was thinking about a completely drivetrain swap
