Okay well today I installed my J10 brake lines.. they are a little long but I will think of something... then i put in my new driveshaft... Looks like it will be time to notch the crossmember... and then I spliced on more hose to the end of the vaccum lines that go to my vaccum engaged axle.. okay then I went to test it..
well as another post of mine said I was gettting a grinding noise when I would start my jeep and try to put it in park after being in gear.. so i started it up and pulled the little lever to the right and put it into 4wd.. I then put it into rev a then back into drive to get it all synced up.. so i go to take off and it just doesn't feel like it has any power at all... just not feeling good at all.. so when I give if gas I kind of hear a faint scraping/winding noise.. I am just driving it around the block.. i think that maybe my new driveshaft is making the noise.. so i go around the block and then i get to a stop sign and kind of a straight a way after so i decide to give it some gas i do and I make it through the intersecting and then the noise of my engine reving.. cause i am now going no where.. I manage to turn her around using the momentum and i stop try to give it gas and nothing.. so i try to put it into park and i get the same grinding noise i did before while I had it up on jack stands... so i (while in reverse) take it out of 4wd and into 2wd i get a sudden jerk back but no noises... I then put it into drive and it goes just fine... and pull into the drive way and there she sits...

if anyone dared to read this long story what do you think it is... T/C (but why only 4wd not 2wd)? or transmission.. (but why only 4wd not 2wd)? other then those i can't think of anything else that would cause this.. any ideas would be great thanks!!!

Dixon,

This is basically the position I was in a few weeks ago. 4WD would leave me spinning free, but not immediately. The 229 wouldn't give it up until I was a ways from home (~2 blocks to 5 miles)

I swapped out my 84 Front axle, which was vacuum disco like yours, with a newer model from a 86. I tried once more to make the 229 work, just to see if the problem was in the axle or in the transfer case. I still had the same problems, which verified, at least for me, the need to grab a 208 and put it in there. I haven't had a problem since.

Best luck.

Does sound like the Xfer case. I could not shed more light than that. I am sure someone can.

well.. maybe I might need the 208 quicker then I thoguht.. if it was low on fluid would it "tweak out" like a auto trans???

Check your shifters sounds like maybe the transfer case is not fully engaging go under and shift it manually (while off)...Alternative to notching your crossmember I welded a 1/4" (I think) plate on top of my crossmember that sticks out in front (gussetted it underneath) and moved the crossmember back....the holes are already there I am asuming from the quadratrac setups of the earlier days...it is strong and the driveshaft could drop 90 degrees straight down and still not hit the crossmamber!!

I just had to buy a new/used 229. Mine went out about 2 weeks ago. It 2 WD it would not go into park or go foward, but in 4WD it would go into park and would work fine. come to find out it was the VC....so I bought a used 229 from crazy
