My 81:a Cherokee is leaking from the fueltank! Is´t diffucult to take down the tank to check were from it´s dripping?
I´we heard somthing about that the tank should been of plastic? Is that true?
Is this a common promblem??? I´we had the jeep for six monthe so I´am not so familary with it yet!

81 wags have plastic tanks. cant say for sure about cheros. under the rear seat is a round access plate this exposes the fuel pick up and return lines. there are rubber connector hoses these could be rotten. also though, it may be the pickup tube itself.other suspects are the various vent line connections and the filler hose. if the tank is plastic it is not likely to be the problem

Hmm... It maybe be "venting" ? Do you have a vented gas cap? My jeep started leaking gas. Turns out the pressure would build up and force fuel out of the vapor/return/vent lines or something...

I cut small pie shape out of the rubber washer on the gas cap. No more leak. (thanks lindel!!)

OK!Maybe is "venting" but do they just too start leaking gas?? but if it´s the tank that is leaking, is´t hard work to take down the thank???

Welcome to the forum, Jonas! As andy d stated, the first step is to check the rubber lines, then drop the tank if necessary. Here is a link to the technical pages of this site with some articles on how to do that... http://www.ifsja.org/tech/index.shtml
Hope it helps,

If it is plastic it will have a metal "coffin" around it to support the tank. I don't know for sure if an 81 Cherokee came with a plastic tank from the factory (anyone else??). But what if the PO put it in?

You'll have to climb under and poke it with your finger. :D Not too hard now!! You should be able to tell with a flashlight if it has a coffin or not. If it does, the tank is probably plastic!

The rain was pooring down yeaserday so id´t do anything about it but notice that it had that metal "coffin" around it so hopfully the tank is made om plastic! /jonas...
