Brake cleaner is good for getting the last little gunks off...but it leaves residues.
What you want is simple acetone and rags to prep for the painting.

Carb cleaner will leave a residue.
Brake cleaner shouldn't.
If it left a residue then it wouldn't be very good for stopping!!

Brake cleaner works out real well but you can't beat the acetone. Just don't forget to be well ventilated and wear some gloves.

Whenever I paint I use what the manufacturer recommends, wax and grease remover. I buy it in five gal. cans and use it for many different jobs including cleaning brakes. For small jobs I use a triger pump plastic spray bottle, for med. jobs I use a SHURE SHOT pressurised spray can and for large jobs like machinery I will fill my paint spray gun. I start at the top and use a brush. Dan
